Traveling internationally with your furry bestie is not as simple as booking a flight and packing treats (although treats are obviously essential). Every country has its own rules and requirements for pet travel, and some of them can take WEEKS or even MONTHS to complete.

Here’s your friendly Stone Ave Vet reminder to start planning EARLY ⏰👇

🐾 Most countries require:
• A current Rabies vaccine
• An ISO-compatible microchip
• A USDA-endorsed health certificate
• Specific timelines for exams, vaccines, and paperwork
• Sometimes bloodwork or parasite treatments before travel

🌎 And here’s the tricky part…
Every country is different. Some require paperwork within 10 days of travel, while others may need testing done months in advance. One missed step can delay travel or even prevent your pet from entering the country 😳

💡 We recommend reaching out several months in advance whenever possible so there’s time to:
✔️ Verify requirements
✔️ Update vaccines/microchips
✔️ Complete testing
✔️ Prepare paperwork correctly
✔️ Avoid last-minute panic spirals

📍At Stone Ave Vet, we’re happy to help guide you through the process and make travel prep as fear-free as possible for both you and your pet.

🐱🌸 May 31st marks the start of National Adopt a Cat Month… and honestly, the cats have been waiting for this announcement. 👑

Shelters everywhere are overflowing with kittens, cats, tiny chaos goblins, professional biscuit makers, and emotionally unavailable roommates looking for a place to call home. 💚

At Stone Ave Vet, we’re big fans of adoption. Rescue cats have a special way of choosing you when you least expect it… and suddenly your camera roll is 97% blurry cat photos and you’re buying them toys they’ll ignore in favor of a cardboard box. 😅

🐾 Why adopt?
✨ You’re giving a pet a second chance
✨ You’re helping reduce shelter overcrowding
✨ Adult cats often already know litterbox manners (a HUGE win)
✨ Shelter cats come in every personality type imaginable:
• cuddly Velcro cat
• orange cat energy
• tiny panther lurking in the hallway at 3am
• biscuit factory supervisor
• judgmental but lovable gremlin

🏠 Bringing home a new kitty? Remember:
🐱 Slow introductions are key
🐱 Give them safe hiding spaces
🐱 Schedule a veterinary visit early
🐱 Patience goes a LONG way while they adjust

Whether you adopt a playful kitten or a senior cat looking for a quiet couch to nap on, you’re changing a life forever. ❤️

If you’ve adopted a cat, drop a photo below of your little rescue gremlin — we’d LOVE to see them. 🐾

🌡️🐾 It’s officially “your dog sits down halfway through the walk and refuses to move” season. 🥵

South Carolina heat is NO joke, and while we may be able to cool off with iced coffee and air conditioning, our pups can struggle much faster in rising temperatures.

At Stone Ave Vet, we see an increase in heat-related illnesses every summer — and the scary part is how quickly it can happen. Heatstroke can become life-threatening in just minutes.

☀️ Here’s your friendly reminder to help keep your furry bestie safe this summer:

🐾 Walk smarter, not hotter
Aim for early morning or late evening walks when sidewalks and pavement have cooled down. Midday pavement can seriously burn paw pads.

✋ Try the 5-second rule
Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.

💦 Hydration matters
Bring water everywhere. Park trip? Water. Walk? Water. Sitting outside for 10 minutes? Still water. Your dog would also probably appreciate not drinking bathwater for survival. 😂

🚫 No pets left in cars. Ever.
Not for “just a minute.” Not with the windows cracked. Temperatures inside vehicles rise FAST and can quickly become deadly.

🐶 Know the warning signs of overheating:
• Excessive panting
• Thick drool
• Weakness or wobbling
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Bright red gums
• Collapse

If you notice these signs, move your pet to a cool area immediately and contact a veterinarian ASAP.

🧊 Bonus summer enrichment ideas:
✔️ Frozen lick mats
✔️ Kiddie pools
✔️ Sprinkler zoomies

We want your pets soaking up summer memories — not emergency vet visits. Stay cool out there, friends. 💚

🐾 Memorial Day 🐾

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Their courage, service, and sacrifice are the reason we are able to enjoy the freedoms and moments we often take for granted every single day. ❤️🤍💙

At Stone Ave Vet, we’re especially thankful for the military families, veterans, and service members in our community — both two-legged and four-legged. 🐶🇺🇸

While many of us are spending the day enjoying cookouts, sunshine, and time with family, Memorial Day is also a reminder to slow down and reflect on the meaning behind the holiday.

✨ A few pet safety reminders for the holiday weekend:
🌭 Skip the table scraps — fatty foods and bones can quickly turn into an emergency visit.
☀️ Make sure pets have access to shade and fresh water during outdoor gatherings.
🎆 Some pets may already be stressed from weekend festivities and loud noises, so provide them with a quiet, safe space if needed.
🚪 Keep an eye on gates and doors — holiday guests can make sneaky escape opportunities for curious pets.

Today we remember the heroes who gave everything, and we hold their families close in our hearts. Wishing everyone a safe, peaceful Memorial Day spent with the people — and pets — you love most. 💚

🐾❤️ National Rescue Dog Day ❤️🐾

Today we’re celebrating the dogs who may have been rescued… but somehow end up rescuing us right back. 🥹

Meet Mr. Ben 🐶✨
A sweet, gentle soul with a playful spirit and the CUTEST little underbite you’ve ever seen. Seriously… it deserves its own fan club. 😭

Mr. Ben was rescued from a local shelter and quickly completely stole the hearts of his foster family — so naturally, he claimed a permanent spot on their couch shortly after. As he should. 👑

This handsome guy loves cuddling on the couch, rolling around in the grass, sitting on the porch watching the yard like it’s his full-time job, and he’s still learning how to play with toys. Watching rescue dogs discover how to just be dogs again will never not melt our hearts. 💚

Mr. Ben also LOVES visiting Stone Ave Vet because he knows he’s in great hands with Dr. Whitney Ozment and the rest of our amazing team as he prepares for surgery to repair an old leg injury. We can’t wait to see him feeling better, enjoying long walks, and chasing tennis balls like the happy pup he was always meant to be. 🎾🐾

Rescue dogs come with stories we may never fully know, but what we DO know is this — they deserve love, safety, patience, and a family that sees how special they are. Whether they came from a shelter, a rescue, or were simply given a second chance, these pups have a way of reminding us what unconditional love really looks like.

At Stone Ave Vet, rescue pets hold a very special place in our hearts. From the shy ones learning to trust again to the wild zoomie machines adjusting to home life… we’re honored to be part of their journey. 💚

So today, give your rescue pup an extra treat, an extra cuddle, and maybe forgive them for barking at absolutely nothing at 3am. They’re doing their best. 😂

Drop a photo of your rescue dog in the comments — we would LOVE to celebrate them with you! 🐾

🐜🕷️ Fleas & Ticks Are Back… and they did NOT ask for permission. 🙃

Warm weather in the Upstate means more sunshine, more adventures… and unfortunately, more creepy crawly freeloaders trying to move into your pet’s fur. Fleas and ticks are more than just annoying — they can carry diseases, cause skin infections, anemia, tapeworms, Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, and more. Yikes.

The good news? Prevention is WAY easier (and cheaper 👀) than treating a full blown flea infestation in your house later. Trust us… nobody wants to wash every blanket they own while vacuuming their baseboards for 3 days straight.

At Stone Ave Vet, we offer several safe and effective prevention options for both dogs and cats depending on your pet’s lifestyle, age, and needs.

🐶 For Dogs:
✨ Simparica Trio – Monthly chewable that protects against fleas, ticks, heartworms, PLUS intestinal parasites. Basically the overachiever of preventions.

✨ Bravecto – A longer-lasting flea and tick chew that protects for up to 12 weeks. Fewer doses = fewer “Oops, I forgot.” moments.

✨ Bravecto Quantum – Long-acting injectable flea & tick prevention designed to give extended protection without monthly dosing. Great for busy pet parents or pets who think pills are a personal attack. 😅

🐱 For Cats:
✨ NexGard Combo – Monthly topical protection against fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites all in one easy application. Tiny tube. Big protection.

✨ Bravecto Topical – Long-lasting flea and tick prevention for cats that protects for up to 12 weeks. Because wrestling your cat monthly is not everyone’s dream hobby.

💡 Even indoor pets need protection! Fleas and ticks can hitch rides inside on shoes, clothing, other pets, or even through open doors. Yes… your strictly indoor cat still somehow finds a way to be dramatic AND at risk.

Not sure which prevention is best for your pet? Our team would love to help you find the right fit based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and health history.

📞 Give us a call to keep those tails wagging, whiskers twitching, and parasites FAR away from your household. 💚

🛑🐾 Indoor pets are safe… but are they protected? 🐾🛑

We hear this all the time:
“My pet doesn’t go outside, so they don’t need vaccines… right?”

We get it—it feels like they’re protected. But here’s the reality: indoor-only doesn’t mean zero risk.

Let’s talk facts (no scare tactics, just real life):
✨ Doors get left open
✨ Pets slip out (they’re faster than you think)
✨ Mosquitoes, fleas, and other pests… come inside
✨ You can unknowingly bring things home on shoes, clothes, or hands

And then there’s rabies—which is required by law and transmitted through wildlife like bats (yes… even inside homes 😬). It’s also fatal once symptoms appear, for both pets and people.

Vaccines aren’t just about exposure—they’re about protection before the “what if” happens.

💉 Core vaccines (like rabies) help protect against serious, preventable diseases
💉 They keep your pet safe and help protect your family and community
💉 They’re tailored to your pet’s lifestyle—yes, even the couch potato kind 🛋️

At Stone Ave Vet, we’re all about proactive, fear-free care—not waiting until something goes wrong.

📲 Not sure what your indoor pet actually needs? Let’s talk. We’ll build a plan that makes sense for your pet and keeps things simple, safe, and stress-free.

Because “indoor-only” shouldn’t mean “unprotected.” 💙

🫀🐾 Heartworm Awareness Month: Let’s talk prevention (for dogs and cats) 🐾🫀

Heartworm disease is something we see every year—and the tough part is, it’s almost entirely preventable.

Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes and can affect both dogs and cats. Once infected, the worms live in the heart and lungs, where they can cause serious—and sometimes permanent—damage.

Here’s what that means for your pets:
• Dogs can develop heavy infections that require lengthy, costly treatment
• Cats may only have a few worms, but even that can lead to severe respiratory issues—and there is no approved treatment for heartworms in cats

Even indoor pets aren’t completely protected. All it takes is one mosquito getting inside.

The good news? Prevention is simple and effective.
✔️ Monthly heartworm prevention protects both dogs and cats
✔️ Annual testing (for dogs) helps us catch anything early
✔️ Year-round prevention keeps your pet consistently covered

At Stone Ave Vet, we’re here to make prevention easy and stress-free—for you and your pet.

📲 If you’re unsure whether your pet is protected or due for testing, reach out to our team. We’re happy to help you find the best plan.

Because protecting their heart is part of loving them well. 💙
