👃🐾 It's More Than Just a Quick Peek! 🐾👂

When your pet comes in for their annual exam, they're getting much more than a few head scratches (although those are pretty important too 😉).

Our doctors perform a nose-to-tail physical exam to help catch small problems before they become big ones.

Here's what we're checking:
👀 Eyes for vision changes, redness, or cataracts
👂 Ears for infection, inflammation, or pesky hitchhikers
🦷 Teeth and gums for dental disease
❤️ Heart and lungs for abnormal sounds or changes
⚖️ Weight and body condition to keep your pet feeling their best
🤲 Lymph nodes for swelling
🦴 Joints and muscles for pain, arthritis, or mobility concerns
🐕 Skin and coat for lumps, bumps, allergies, parasites, or anything unusual
🤰 Abdomen for changes in the organs or signs of discomfort
🐾 Nails and paw pads for injuries, overgrowth, or hidden problems

Here's the thing...our pets are experts at hiding when something isn't right. By the time they're showing obvious signs, they've often been feeling bad for a while.

That's why annual wellness exams matter. They're one of the best tools we have to detect disease early, monitor changes over time, and keep your best friend happy and healthy for years to come.

☀️🔥 Too Hot to Handle? Your Pet Thinks So Too. 🔥☀️

Summer in the South isn't just uncomfortable...it can be downright dangerous. 🥵

Heat stroke can happen FAST, and by the time your pet is showing obvious signs, it may already be a medical emergency.

🚩 Know the warning signs:
🐾 Excessive panting
🐾 Bright red or pale gums
🐾 Drooling more than normal
🐾 Weakness or stumbling
🐾 Vomiting or diarrhea
🐾 Confusion or acting "off"
🐾 Collapse or seizures

💧 Help prevent heat stroke by:
✔️ Walking early in the morning or later in the evening
✔️ Always providing fresh, cool water
✔️ Taking frequent shade breaks
✔️ Avoiding strenuous exercise on hot days
✔️ Leaving your pet at home instead of in the car (yes...even "just for a minute." 🚗🔥)

🐶 Remember: Some pets are at an even higher risk, including brachycephalic breeds (like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Frenchies), senior pets, overweight pets, and those with heart or respiratory conditions.

❤️ If you think your pet is overheating, move them to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water, and call your veterinarian right away. Time matters.

🎆🐾 Fireworks Are Fun for Us... Not So Much for Our Pets. 🐾🎆

Hey Friend!

While we're celebrating with backyard cookouts, sparklers, and fireworks, many dogs and cats are wondering if the world is ending. 😬
In fact, the Fourth of July is one of the busiest times of the year for lost pets because frightened animals can panic, escape fences, slip collars, or dart out open doors.

Here are a few ways to help your furry family members stay safe and stress-free:

🏠 Keep pets indoors before fireworks begin
Even pets who normally enjoy being outside can become startled by unexpected booms and flashes.

🎵 Create a calm space
Turn on the TV, a fan, or some calming music to help drown out outside noises. A quiet bedroom, closet, or cozy crate can become a safe retreat.

🚪 Double-check doors, gates, and windows
It only takes a second for a scared pet to make a run for it.

🏷️ Make sure identification is up to date
Collars should have current tags, and microchip information should be updated with your current phone number and address.

🐕 Exercise dogs earlier in the day
A long walk, game of fetch, or enrichment activity before the festivities start can help burn off extra energy and reduce anxiety.

💊 Don't wait until the last minute for anxiety medications
If your pet has a history of firework anxiety, call us before the holiday. Some medications work best when started before the fireworks begin.

🚫 Never bring pets to fireworks displays
Even the most social, friendly pet can become overwhelmed by the noise and crowds.

🐱 And don't forget the cats!
Many cats hide when they're scared. Make sure they are safely indoors and have access to their favorite hiding spots.

❤️ Remember: if your pet is pacing, panting, trembling, hiding, drooling, vocalizing, or trying to escape, they're not "being dramatic"—they're scared.

Hey Friend!

While you're firing up the grill and filling your plate this Independence Day, don't forget that some of our favorite holiday foods can be dangerous for our four-legged family members.

🐾 Safe Treats for Dogs & Cats (in moderation):
✅ Plain cooked chicken, turkey, or beef (no seasoning)
✅ Plain hamburger patty
✅ Small bites of watermelon (seedless)
✅ Blueberries
✅ Strawberries
✅ Carrots
✅ Green beans

🚫 Foods to Keep FAR Away From Pets:
❌ Onions, garlic, chives, and foods seasoned with them
❌ Grapes and raisins
❌ Corn on the cob (major choking and obstruction risk!)
❌ Chocolate
❌ Alcohol
❌ Xylitol (found in some sugar-free desserts and gum)
❌ Fatty meats, hot dogs, and greasy table scraps
❌ Bones from ribs, chicken, pork, or steak
❌ Macadamia nuts

🌭 A hot dog dropped at the cookout may seem harmless, but between the seasonings, high fat content, and potential toppings, it can quickly turn into an unexpected trip to the vet.

Our best advice? Keep a few pet-safe treats handy so your furry family members can join the celebration without risking a tummy ache—or worse.
