This week has been something. And this weekās $5 Friday is one of those posts that breaks your heart a little.
Yesterday, we received a call from Greenville Public Safety about two cats found inside a home after their owner had passed away. The person had been there for quite some time. It was a postal worker who noticed the mail piling up and requested a wellness check.
And inside that home, two cats were still waiting.
Waiting for their person to come home. Waiting for food. Waiting for someone to open the door. Waiting in a home that had suddenly become completely silent.
We donāt know how long Meatball & Mushroom were alone. We donāt know how long they cried for their person or how many days they spent wondering where they had gone.
What we do know is that they survived.
And when we finally opened that door, these two boys were incredibly sweet. They werenāt angry. They werenāt aggressive. They were justā¦ there. Two cats who had lost their entire world and somehow still had love to give.
We named them Meatball & Mushroom. ā¤ļø
There are situations in rescue that stay with you. This is one of them.
Please check on your friends. Check on your neighbors. Check on the person whose mail hasnāt been picked up. Check on the person who hasnāt answered your texts. Sometimes a simple knock on a door can mean everything.
Meatball & Mushroom are safe now, but their rescue journey is just beginning. Both boys need full veterinary examinations and vaccine updates, and both need dental surgeries before they can find new homes.
And we need to be honest: we did not have room for them.
Our adult adoption centers are full. Our foster homes are full. We are bursting at the seams with adult cats. But when Greenville Public Safety called, there was no way we were going to say, āSorry, weāre full.ā
They had already lost their person.
They werenāt going to lose their chance at a future, too.
Adults are so often overlooked because everyone wants a kitten. But these boys have already been through enough. They deserve a warm bed. A safe home. Someone who comes back through the door every day.
