🐾 Fun Fact Friday: What’s Really in Your Dog’s Treats? 🦴

Treats are a great way to reward good behavior, show your dog some love, or just enjoy a cute snack break together. But here’s something many pet parents don’t realize…

Some dog treats have more calories than a slice of bread or even a small donut! 🍩😱

Just a few extra calories a day can lead to weight gain over time, especially for small dogs or dogs who aren’t very active. And it adds up fast:
➡️ One medium biscuit = ~70 calories
➡️ One slice of cheese = ~113 calories
➡️ One hot dog (often used for training) = ~150 calories

🐶 So how many treats are too many?
Veterinarians recommend that treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake. That means a 20-pound dog who eats 400 calories a day should only get 40 calories in treats. Yep — that’s like half a large biscuit!

Smarter Treat Tips:
✅ Break big treats into smaller pieces
✅ Use low-calorie options like plain rice cakes, carrots, or green beans
✅ Set aside part of your dog’s kibble as “treats” during the day
✅ Choose treats with real ingredients and minimal fillers

And don’t forget to adjust meal portions if your pup’s been extra spoiled lately 😉

Keeping treats in check helps prevent obesity, joint problems, diabetes, and other health issues and it keeps your dog feeling their best for all those adventures ahead! 🐕💪

🐾 Fun Fact Friday: Your Dog’s Noseprint Is One of a Kind! 🐾

Did you know your pup’s noseprint is as unique as your fingerprint? 👃🐶

Just like humans have fingerprints, dogs have nose prints with their own special patterns of ridges and creases. No two are exactly alike! 😮✨

Nose prints are so unique that some organizations actually use them to identify dogs, much like ID cards for people! It’s a natural “signature” right on their snout. 🖋️🐾

You’ve probably seen those adorable close-up photos of dog noses — the famous “.5 pictures” — where the nose fills the whole frame. Those aren’t just cute; they show off all the unique little details that make your dog’s nose print totally one-of-a-kind! Can anyone spot the difference in Ducky and Ace’s nose prints?📸👃💕

Want to try it at home? Gently press your dog’s nose on a piece of paper with non-toxic ink (or use a pet-safe nose print kit) and keep it as a one-of-a-kind keepsake! Just don’t forget to give lots of treats afterward. 🦴❤️

Next time you boop that adorable snoot, remember—it’s not just cute, it’s a one-of-a-kind masterpiece! 🎨🐽

🐾 Fun Fact Friday: Extra Toes, Extra History! 🐾

Meet Momo (a.k.a. Motoe)—With his mighty mitten paws, we’re convinced he’s not just a cat… he’s a retired pirate captain in disguise. 🏴‍☠️🐱⚓️

Why the pirate theory? Well, Momo’s got extra toes—and that makes him a polydactyl cat! These quirky felines can have up to 28 toes, which is 10 more than the average kitty. That’s a whole treasure chest of toe beans. 🫘🫘🫘

Back in the day, sailors loved polydactyl cats. They believed those bonus toes helped cats stay balanced on rough seas—and brought good luck to the crew. Clearly, Momo was made for the high seas (or at least the banisters). 🗺️🗝️

Even Ernest Hemingway was a fan! His home in Key West is still full of multi-toed descendants—affectionately known as “Hemingway cats.”

So if you spot a cat with oversized mitten paws, give them a salute—they might just have a pirate past like Momo. 🐾🦴

P.S. swipe for a in-depth toe bean pic!!!

Wait… your dog likes reggae?

FoCoMX is rocking Fort Collins this weekend, and while we’re holding down the fort at the clinic, we’ve been jamming to some research on what kind of music your pets actually enjoy. Spoiler: cats are picky. Dogs dig the classics.
