🐾 Fun Fact Friday: What’s Really in Your Dog’s Treats? 🦴
Treats are a great way to reward good behavior, show your dog some love, or just enjoy a cute snack break together. But here’s something many pet parents don’t realize…
Some dog treats have more calories than a slice of bread or even a small donut! 🍩😱
Just a few extra calories a day can lead to weight gain over time, especially for small dogs or dogs who aren’t very active. And it adds up fast:
➡️ One medium biscuit = ~70 calories
➡️ One slice of cheese = ~113 calories
➡️ One hot dog (often used for training) = ~150 calories
🐶 So how many treats are too many?
Veterinarians recommend that treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake. That means a 20-pound dog who eats 400 calories a day should only get 40 calories in treats. Yep — that’s like half a large biscuit!
Smarter Treat Tips:
✅ Break big treats into smaller pieces
✅ Use low-calorie options like plain rice cakes, carrots, or green beans
✅ Set aside part of your dog’s kibble as “treats” during the day
✅ Choose treats with real ingredients and minimal fillers
And don’t forget to adjust meal portions if your pup’s been extra spoiled lately 😉
Keeping treats in check helps prevent obesity, joint problems, diabetes, and other health issues and it keeps your dog feeling their best for all those adventures ahead! 🐕💪
