One of the core values of True Blue Equine is safety. There are a lot of misconceptions around what that means...
Safety is NOT...
🚫 You will never get hurt. If you're afraid to get hurt, you don't belong here. Cowboy up, show 'em who's boss, and get back in the saddle. There's no purpose for fear and it has no place around horses.
🚫 You are riding a 1200 pound prey animal whose species has developed extremely hightened sensitivity and environmental awareness over the last 50 million years that often results in a reactive fight or flight response. Don't worry though, we trained that out of them. They are robots now. Bombproof, just like a car or a bicycle.
🚫 You must do exactly what your coach says, when exactly when she says it. You're not allowed to make a mistake. EVER. Being perfect means nothing bad ever happens. You can control everything around you if only you know enough and do everything right.
This isn't horsemanship. Its certainly not safe horsemanship.
Safety is not WHAT you do with horses, but rather HOW you do it. We teach students to do things safely because personal safety is a life skill that we all must learn.
✅️ Safety is trusting and listening to your own instincts. Fear has a purpose - it keeps us safe, makes us aware, and allows us the opportunity to be brave. Bravery, by its very definition, cannot happen without fear, they MUST be experienced together. Sometimes the bravest thing to do is step back, reset, gather resources (like asking your coach for help), and live to try another day.
✅️ We trust horses to be horses, and they are categorically unsafe by human standards. They are bigger, faster and stronger than humans in every way. We don't take that for granted. It is physically impossible to bombproof a horse and incredibly arrogant to think otherwise. No matter how you try, you cannot untrain instincts that have been perfected over 50 millions years of evolution. It's not about training the horse, its about training the human. We teach students to respect, recognize and respond to the horses' instinctual nature, innate behavior, and body language in the present moment. This is how true connection is built.
✅️ You have the power to make safe choices and to practice safe horsemanship. We will teach you what that looks like. Every skill and technique you will learn here has a purpose, but how you utikize those tools is up to you. You cannot control everything, but you can control you and we will give you the tools you need.
Safety is ingrained into our program and into every minute of every lesson every single day. We give each individual the tools and skills they need, empowering them to own their own safety. Their safety contributes to the safety of the entire herd. This is how True Blue Equine has become a safe space for and because of our clients, horses, and coaches.
