ARE YOU GOING TO THE STATE FAIR THIS YEAR???

This year, the Minnesota Senate State Fair poll includes the following question:
"Should Minnesota ban pet shops from selling dogs and cats while continuing to allow pet shops to host adoption events for animals from shelters or rescue organizations?"

If you're attending the Minnesota State Fair, please stop by the Minnesota Senate booth in the Education Building and vote "YES" on Question 3.

Legislation to prohibit the sale of puppies in pet shops is expected to be considered again in 2027. A strong show of support at the State Fair can help demonstrate that Minnesotans want lawmakers to take action to stop the puppy mill pipeline and protect animals and consumers.

🐾 Another Cause for Itchy Paws
If your dog is constantly licking or chewing her paws, allergies may not be the whole story.
Every time your dog walks through grass, yards, sidewalks, or outdoor spaces, her paws can collect pollen, mold spores, dust, fertilizers, pesticides, and other environmental irritants. Think of those furry feet as little Swiffers picking up everything in their path!
And simply wiping the paws off often isn’t enough. Irritants can hide between the toes, around the nailbeds, and deep in the paw pads.
One of my favorite simple strategies is a regular paw soak. 💚
A soothing foot soak can help physically remove environmental allergens and irritants from the skin while giving those hard-working paws a little TLC. For many dogs with seasonal paw licking, reducing their daily exposure can make a meaningful difference.
🐾 For medium and large dogs: use a bucket or basin and soak one paw at a time.
🐾 For small dogs: a shallow basin or sink works well.
🐾 Afterward: rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes.
I’ve also included my Detoxifying Paw Soak recipe with green tea, apple cider vinegar, Epsom salts, and an optional antimicrobial addition.
Save this recipe for your next itchy-paw flare-up! 🌿🐶
And remember: if your dog’s paws are persistently red, swollen, painful, smelly, or she’s licking them obsessively, don’t assume it’s just allergies. Yeast, bacterial infections, parasites, foreign bodies, and other underlying problems can also cause paw irritation and deserve a veterinary evaluation.
Healthy paws start with reducing what touches them every day. 💚 Grab the recipe details in my blog, link in comments 🐾

Does your dog keep getting ear infections?
A large UK study of more than 900,000 dogs under veterinary care found that 7.3% of dogs, about 1 in 14, developed otitis externa (ear inflammation) in a single year, making it one of the most common conditions veterinarians treat.
Researchers discovered that breed and ear shape matter. Compared to dogs with upright, erect ears, dogs with pendulous ears had 1.76 times the odds of developing ear infections, and dogs with V-shaped drop ears had 1.84 times the odds. Some of the highest-risk breeds included:
🐾 Basset Hounds (nearly 6x the odds of crossbred dogs)🐾 Chinese Shar-Peis (over 3x the odds) 🐾 Labradoodles (almost 3x the odds) 🐾 Beagles (2.5x the odds) 🐾 Golden Retrievers (over 2x the odds)
Interestingly, some breeds actually showed lower odds of ear infections than crossbred dogs, including Chihuahuas, Border Collies, Yorkshire Terriers, and Jack Russell Terriers, a good reminder that ear shape and breed genetics really do shift risk in both directions.
The good news? Ear infections are often preventable with proactive care.
✔️ Check your dog’s ears weekly for redness, odor, discharge, or excessive wax. ✔️ Keep ears clean and dry, especially after swimming or bathing. ✔️ Address underlying allergies, because chronic inflammation often starts from the inside out. ✔️ Feed a fresh, anti-inflammatory diet and support a healthy gut microbiome, since allergies and ear disease frequently go hand in hand.
Remember, floppy ears don’t cause infections, but they can create a warm, humid environment where yeast and bacteria thrive. If your dog’s breed is on the higher-risk list, that’s not a guarantee of trouble; it’s just a sign to be a little more proactive with routine ear checks.
Healthy ears start with healthy skin, a balanced immune system, and good preventive care. Read my blog on tackling ear issues, link in comments 🐕

Why does your dog hesitate when it rains?

It might not be because they hate getting wet.

Rain can amplify sounds, and dogs have incredibly sensitive hearing. The extra noise can actually feel overwhelming to some dogs.

So next time your dog stops at the door in the rain… they may not be being stubborn. They may simply be listening.
