💧 Leptospirosis is spread through the urine of infected animals and can be found in standing water, soil, yards, sidewalks, and other outdoor areas. Dogs can become infected when the bacteria enter through cuts or mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose, or mouth.
⚠️ Even dogs that appear healthy can carry and spread leptospirosis to other DOGS and HUMANS. Outdoor activity, contact with contaminated urine, natural water sources, and wildlife exposure all increase risk.
🐾 Symptoms may be mild or nonspecific, including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, decreased appetite, and weakness. Because treatment can be intensive and expensive, early veterinary care is key to improving outcomes and preventing irreversible liver and kidney damage.
