🚨Important Health Update from Dr. Virginia Ellsworth & East Dallas Veterinary Clinic 🚨

Dear EDVC Clients and Community,

We want to provide you with an important update regarding the growing concern surrounding the New World Screwworm (NWS).

At this time, New World Screwworm has NOT been detected in the United States. However, cases have been confirmed in two Mexican states bordering Texas, with the closest confirmed case currently located approximately 62 miles south of McAllen, Texas.

The Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) recently testified before the Texas Senate Committee on Water, Agriculture, and Rural Affairs emphasizing that ALL veterinarians in Texas — including companion animal veterinarians — will play a critical role in early detection, prevention, and public education.

📊 Current Confirmed Cases in Mexico Include:
• 913 cattle
• 455 dogs
• 136 swine
• 88 horses
• 1 cat
• 1 endangered howler monkey

The United States has already implemented several proactive measures, including:
✔️ Closing southern livestock ports
✔️ Opening a sterile fly dispersal facility in South Texas
✔️ Expanding sterile fly production capabilities
✔️ Authorizing emergency use medications for prevention and treatment support
✔️ Investing over $100 million into NWS response initiatives

🐾 What This Means for Pet Owners

Pet owners should remain vigilant and monitor pets closely for:
• Unusual wounds or skin lesions
• Excessive licking or irritation
• Drainage or foul odors from wounds
• Signs of infection or discomfort

If you notice anything concerning, contact your veterinarian immediately.

We want to make you aware of an important animal health concern — the recent detection of the New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in our region. This parasitic fly poses a serious threat to livestock, wildlife, and domestic pets.

The adult screwworm fly lays its eggs in open wounds, surgical sites, or even small cuts on animals. Once hatched, the larvae (maggots) feed on living tissue, causing severe pain, infection, tissue damage, and in some cases, death if left untreated.

Why This Matters:

Cattle and livestock are particularly vulnerable — infestations can lead to significant economic losses due to decreased weight gain, reduced milk production, and the need for intensive veterinary care.
Dogs, cats, and other pets can also become hosts, especially if they have open wounds or skin irritations.
The parasite spreads rapidly through fly movement and can impact both rural and urban areas.
What You Can Do:

Check animals regularly for wounds or unusual behavior (licking, restlessness, odor).
Keep wounds clean and promptly treated.
Use approved fly repellents and wound protectants.
Report any suspicious maggot infestations to your veterinarian immediately.
At East Dallas Veterinary Clinic, we are monitoring this situation closely and are available to provide wound care guidance, preventive treatment recommendations, and diagnostic support if needed. https://bit.ly/3LHdYaw
