Externships are a valuable opportunity for DVM students to explore specialties, build confidence, and learn alongside experienced clinicians in a collaborative environment.

At MedVet, we love welcoming students into our hospitals and helping provide hands-on experience in advanced patient care and specialty medicine.

Nadeen Baluom, a recent extern, shared:
“Having done an externship at both MedVet Internal Medicine and Neurology has allowed me the opportunity to further develop and enhance my knowledge on rather difficult subjects, delving into the specialties alongside such intelligent and collaborative individuals. I highly recommend the experience as it has surged my interest in specializing myself, and I learned so much under the guidance of MedVet’s finest!”

Interested in exploring externships, mentorship, and training opportunities at MedVet? We’d love to connect with you and help you discover what’s possible for your future in veterinary medicine. https://hubs.la/Q04gSyWL0

Veterinary medicine is incredibly rewarding—and emotionally demanding. Long hours, high caseloads, and caring deeply for patients and families can take a real toll over time.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, Amanda, Hospital Director at MedVet Akron and a Certified Compassion Fatigue Professional, shares insights on compassion fatigue, burnout, and why taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your patients.

If you’re feeling exhausted, disconnected, or overwhelmed, you’re not alone and you don’t have to navigate it by yourself.

Iris got a unique start to life when her mom, a stray cat, chose her family and surprised them with a litter of 10 kittens. Out of the group, Iris was the one they decided to keep but early on, something didn’t seem right. She wasn’t interested in nursing, a key sign that a young kitten may not be feeling well.

At MedVet Diley Hill, Iris was evaluated and given anti-nausea medication to help her feel better, along with a dewormer to address common intestinal parasites that can affect young kittens.

With a little extra support, Iris was able to head back home to her family, where she can continue to grow, thrive, and enjoy life as the kitten who chose them right back. 🐱

We’re giving a closer look at the day-to-day experience of our ECMP participants, from time on the floor to mentorship, collaboration, and the moments between that shape growth and confidence.

In April, caregivers from MedVet Cincinnati partnered with the Anderson Professional Firefighters - Local 3111 to provide hands-on CPR and First Aid training for nearly 50 first responders. 🚒

Led by Amber Hart, RVT, VTS(ECC), and Clara Miller, RVT, the session covered essential skills like CPR techniques, oxygen support, patient evaluation, safe handling, and how to respond to pet opioid exposure.

With support from additional MedVet caregivers and a few very patient canine helpers, first responders had the opportunity to practice these lifesaving skills in a hands-on setting.

It was a meaningful day of collaboration, education, and strengthening the care pets receive in critical moments. 🐾

Cuco, a 2-year-old Pomeranian mix, came to MedVet Austin after an injury left him unable to put weight on his back leg. What started as playtime with his canine housemate turned into something more serious.

After evaluation, Cuco was diagnosed with a chronic hip luxation, meaning his hip joint had been out of place for some time, causing pain and preventing normal movement.

To help him feel better, surgery was performed in the form of a femoral head and neck excision. This procedure removes part of the hip joint, allowing the body to form a “false joint” over time, which can restore comfort and function without the damaged bone.

Just three weeks after surgery, Cuco is already putting weight on his leg again and getting back to enjoying leashed walks with his family. His progress is a great example of how expert specialty care can help pets return to the activities they love. 💙

Ooper, a 4-year-old Porcupine Puffer fish, had her family concerned when she started hiding in her tank and wasn’t eating like usual. They also noticed what looked like a sharp object protruding from her body, raising concern she may have ingested something, possibly a piece of snow crab. 🐟

At MedVet Hilliard, Ooper was evaluated by Board-certified specialist Dr. Nicholas Jew with our Avian and Exotics team. While the object wasn’t seen on exam, radiographs were performed to be sure nothing was missed, and fortunately, they showed no signs of a foreign object.

Our team suspected stress may have caused one of Ooper’s natural spines to shift, creating the appearance of something sharp. She was treated with an anti-inflammatory injection and sent home with follow-up care.

Now, Ooper is back to her usual self, front and center in her tank, showing off that adorable face and keeping a close eye on everything around her. 💛
