While we all love the sight of horses grazing on lush, green pasture in the spring afternoon sun, it's not always the picture perfect scenario for some of our equine friends. Horses that have Equine Metabolic Syndrome, PPID, or are overweight, or are breeds prone to insulin dysfunction may still be able to enjoy grazing if we are smart about when they do so. Timing turnout can be a positive game changer for "easy-keepers" and keep them happy AND healthy.

Grass sugar content can vary widely depending on season, stress, and other factors, so the above Grazing Clock should be taken as a guideline when managing insulin dysfunctional horses. Further questions? Dr. McPherson loves to chat about grass!

The saying goes "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink... " and that's especially true if your water is FROZEN! Frigid ain't fun, folks and neither are impaction colics! We tend to see an increase of this colic emergency when temperatures are tundra-like! Check out these tips to keep your horse hydrated when the temps are plummeting!

1. Check water sources frequently to break up ice and refill regularly.

2. Use heated buckets or well-grounded trough warmers To prevent ice formation in the first place. Horses will drink more water when offered a lukewarm source, especially if it is the sole source of water.

3. Consider adding additional buckets with some electrolytes mixed into the water or a small amount of sweet feed at the bottom to sweeten the taste. Make sure that a plain source of water is ALWAYS available if using this option.

4. Make sure horses have full buckets around feeding times as they consume more water after eating grain and hay.

5. Adding 1 tablespoon of non-iodized table salt to grain as a topdress to encourage drinking. Even BETTER, use Platinum Performance Electrolytes that is specifically balanced for horses and comes with a nifty tablespoon scoop in each bucket! Order at https://www.platinumperformance.com - don't forget to use code WIU in the referring veterinarian box at checkout!

Stay warm and HYDRATED out there!

Day 11: Khamsa al-Rasul Allah

Of Islamic origin, the story of Khamsa al-Rasul Allah goes that the great prophet Muhammad wanted to test his horses’s strength and loyalty so he let them out into the desert. After a couple of days, Muhammad recalled his horses, and only five mares returned. These five mares were called the ā€œBlessed Fiveā€, and said to be the founding mares of all Arabian horse lineages. Each mare had a lineage strain named after them: Abbayan, Seqlawi, Kuhaylan, Hamdani, and Hadban.

Day 10: Headless Horseman

An American tale, the Headless Horseman originates from Sleepy Hollow, New York. The story goes that a soldier was decapitated by a cannonball, buried in the Sleepy Hollow churchyard, and said to haunt the grounds looking for his head. Washington Irving used this colonial era story to inspire his own interpretation of the Headless Horseman who tormented a meek schoolmaster Ichabod Crane. The Headless Horseman most people recognize today is Irving’s spooky pumpkin throwing headless rider, and serves as one of America’s earliest ghost stories.

Day 9: Centaur

Originally from Greek mythology, the centaur is a well known legendary being that is half man, half horse. In Greek lore, centaurs were seen as violent and promiscuous, they roamed the forests, and made weapons from trees, especially bows and arrows. One exception was the great Chiron, a wise centaur that lived at the base of Mount Pelion. He was known for his knowledge of medicine, affinity for astrology, and instruction of some of Greece’s most glorious heroes: Jason, Heracles, Achilles, and Asclepius.

Day: Qilin

Originating from Chinese mythology, Qilin is a half horse, half dragon creature that is one of the Great Four Auspicious Spirits along with the tortoise, the dragon, and the phoenix. A Qilin was said to prophisize the birth of the great philosopher Confucius, who later wrote about the sacred beast. The Qilin symbolizes benevolence, strength, intelligence and luck, and is a prominent figure in Chinese culture, architecture, and texts.
