RABIES ALERT IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY!!!

🚨RABIES ALERT - PORT NORRIS🚨

The Cumberland County Health Dept. is alerting residents in the Port Norris area of a potential rabies exposure involving a litter of kittens from the North Avenue block near Main Street. A recent investigation has confirmed that one of the kittens tested positive for rabies.

Other kittens from the same litter have already been given away to people in the community. If you or someone you know has recently received a kitten from the North Avenue area, please contact the health dept. The kittens may need to be monitored for rabies symptoms. Individuals and other pets that have been in contact with the sick kittens should be checked for potential rabies exposure. Public cooperation is very important during this time.

Rabies is a serious disease that can be deadly, but 100% preventable if treated early. Don't wait, take action to stay safe.

-Keep pets vaccinated
-Avoid contact with wild or stray animals
-Report bites or scratches to your local health dept.
-Receive medical help right away if you think you've been exposed

Tick Alert: Rising Threats in New Jersey!

New Jersey ranks among the highest in the nation for Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. While ticks can be active year-round, they’re especially prevalent during the warmer months — and this year, experts are reporting a significant increase.

The Tick Research Lab at East Stroudsburg University (PA) recorded two and a half times more ticks this May compared to the same time last year. Increased rainfall and mild temperatures have created ideal conditions for tick populations to thrive. As we enjoy more time outdoors, it’s important to stay vigilant — for both ourselves and our pets.

Where Do Ticks Live?
The blacklegged tick (commonly known as the deer tick) is the primary species in New Jersey. These ticks are commonly found in:
• Tall grasses and shrubs
• Wooded areas with leaf litter and undergrowth
• Burrows and dens made by small mammals like mice, squirrels, and chipmunks
• Livestock pastures and open fields
• Coastal dunes and beach grasses

Understanding Lyme Disease:
Lyme disease is caused by a type of bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi) transmitted by certain ticks. It can infect both animals (dogs, cats, horses) and people. While most infected dogs do not develop symptoms, 5% to 10% may become ill — and signs can be serious. Much less is known about how Lyme disease affects cats.

Because Lyme disease can be difficult to diagnose, prevention is key. Avoid tick bites, check for ticks regularly, and in high-risk areas like ours, consider vaccinating your dog.

Signs of Lyme Disease in Dogs:
Symptoms often appear 2–5 months after infection, and by that time, the disease may be widespread. Watch for:
• Intermittent limping or shifting leg lameness
• Fever
• Loss of appetite
• Decreased energy
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Painful or swollen joints

In rare cases (1% to 5%), Lyme disease may lead to Lyme nephritis, a serious kidney condition that can cause swelling, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea — and may even be fatal.
