Irish wolfhound brother and sister duo Jiff and Tull visited us for their puppy shots recently. It’s hard to believe at almost 50 lbs each that they are just three months old! These future show dogs are very cute! Thank you to their owner for trusting us with their care.

Happy New Year, all! Nesta, a Miniature American Shepherd, visited us recently for her puppy shots. Thank you to Nesta’s owner for trusting us with her care. Mini American Shepherds (sometimes called Mini Australian Shepherds) resemble their larger forebears, the Australian Shepherd. Minis are athletic herders in a petite package.

What’s cytology? It’s when we take a sample of cells from tissue and look at them under the microscope. Cytology is minimally invasive. Sometimes we collect the cells with a swab—for instance, if we suspected an ear infection. We might also use a needle (needle biopsy)—for instance, to collect cells from a growth. Looking at cells under a microscope can help to diagnose infection, inflammation, and even some cancers. We can do cytology at the clinic to get answers in a matter of minutes. The second picture is a microscope slide with cells from a needle biopsy of a skin growth. I was looking for cancer cells and found none.

Aggie is a 9-week-old Brittany who came for her first puppy visit. Thank you to Aggie’s owner for trusting us with her care! The Brittany is often referred to as the Brittany spaniel, but Brittanies aren’t actually spaniels (bred to flush game). The AKC dropped spaniel from the name in 1982 after determining Brittanies have more in common with pointing breeds (bred to hold still and “point” toward game).

Clients have been asking about the mystery dog illness, and I’ll be honest, there’s a lot we don’t know. We’re not sure yet what it is, how to test for it, what’s causing it, or the best way to treat it. On the plus side, most cases appear to be mild—the incidence of severe disease appears to be very low. And no cases have yet been reported in NJ. Still, it’s good to be aware. If your dog has trouble breathing, seek treatment immediately.

Scientists at the University of New Hampshire may have identified a pathogen that has sickened possibly thousands of dogs and killed some of them across the country.

Here’s a throwback to a few years ago with an X-ray of a pregnant patient. Dog pregnancy lasts about 8-9 weeks. We’ll often take an X-ray in the final weeks so the owner knows how many pups to expect. This was a small dog, a Havanese. Can you spot all 3 pups on X-ray?
