We’re celebrating our SUN-sational volunteers all week long! Did you know we have about 300 animals in foster homes at any given time? That’s thanks to our amazing foster volunteers! 💛🐾

Last year, 3,179 animals received life-saving care through the efforts of 632 our foster volunteers. That’s 2,571 cats and kittens, 555 dogs and puppies, and 53 small mammals and other animals who were given a second chance. Having animals in foster homes opens space in our shelter and allows us to care for even more animals who need our help. We are so grateful for our incredible foster volunteers – your dedication shines bright!

Do you want to share your sunshine with the animals at the Cleveland APL? Our foster volunteers provide temporary, in-home care for animals until they are ready for adoption and we are always in need of more volunteers to join us! You can sign-up or learn more at https://bit.ly/3ttPsRk.

Today is National Parvo Awareness Day 🐶 — a day dedicated to raising awareness about one of the most serious and contagious diseases in dogs: canine parvovirus, commonly known as parvo.

Parvo is a highly contagious virus that affects a dog’s gastrointestinal tract, causing severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and, in many cases, can be fatal if left untreated. Puppies and unvaccinated dogs are especially at risk — and the virus can survive in the environment for months, making prevention and early detection absolutely crucial.

The good news? Parvo is preventable with timely vaccinations. Ensuring your dog — especially puppies — are up to date on their vaccines is the #1 way to protect them from this dangerous disease.

At the Cleveland APL, we are incredibly fortunate to have the resources and veterinary expertise to treat parvo-positive dogs. Thanks to our donors and our compassionate medical team, we’re able to give sick puppies and dogs a fighting chance — and help them recover, heal, and find loving homes.

But we can't do it alone. Spreading awareness, vaccinating your pets, and supporting organizations like ours helps save lives — every single day.

Meet Sheldon, your future snuggle supervisor! 😻✨

This 3-year-old, 14-pound bundle of plush gray floof is looking for a loving home where he can be adored like the handsome king he is. Sheldon is certifiably adorable, highly pettable, and always ready to make biscuits. He’s got all the personality and charm!

Sheldon is FeLV+ (Feline Leukemia Virus), which means he needs a bit of extra love and care. FeLV affects a cat's immune system, making them more susceptible to illness, so he should be an only cat or live with other FeLV+ kitties. Cats with FeLV can live happy, love-filled lives — especially when they’ve got a human who sees how special they are.

Kicking Off National Volunteer Week with Gratitude! 🌞

Who shines bright every day at the Cleveland APL? Our volunteers, of course - are SUN-sational and adoptable Renzo here agrees!

No one knows this more than our animals, clients and staff at the APL, as we have so many warm, bright, caring, and loving volunteers. Whether you’re walking dogs, cuddling cats, helping with adoptions, organizing the laundry room, fostering, or supporting behind the scenes, your impact is truly immeasurable.

Gingers got the looks, that get the looks! 💛

With a sugary frosted face like this, how could you resist? Meet Ginger, a 10-year-old Beagle mix who is the definition of golden girl charm. Don’t let her age fool you, she has lots of pep in her step and enjoys long walks and car rides. Her favorite things include warm sunny spots, belly rubs, treats, and snuggling. Ginger is a huge fan of the cozy and cuddly life!

Ginger recently went through a lot of changes but settled into her foster home beautifully with a little patience and treats, of course. Her foster described her as goofy, sweet, and incredibly gentle — especially with their resident senior dog. She’s great on leash, listens well, and sleeps through the night like a champ.

Don’t pass up a special girl like Ginger – she’s waiting for her second chance at love right here at the APL!

Happy Foster Friday – Meet Chief! 🌞

This handsome 1.5-year-old Norwegian Elkhound is ready to spring into your life—and your heart. Currently living it up in a foster home, Chief is a higher energy, adventure-loving goofball who absolutely loves being outside. Whether it’s going for a walk, chasing a ball, or just soaking up the smells of the great outdoors, this pup is happiest with the wind in his fur and grass under his paws!

But don’t let all that energy fool you—Chief is also a total sweetheart. He’s friendly, affectionate, and believes he was born to be a lap dog (even if he’s a little on the larger side for it). Once he’s comfortable, he isn’t shy with cuddles and loves to be loved! Chief is not only handsome, he’s gentle and smart, too.

Stop scrolling and take a moment to say hello to Carter – the best good boy out there! 🐶💙

Carter is 1-years-old,100% handsome, and approximately 87% tongue out at all times. He’s got the kind of smile that could solve world problems (or at least yours!) and the wiggle butt to match.

This joyful dude loves playing with toys and romping around the play yard. He knows basic cues and is eager to learn more, especially when snacks are involved. Carter has lots of fun and happy energy to share. He’s the kind of pup who wakes up every morning like it’s Saturday and will treat you like the only one in the room.

This 9-year-old Miniature Pinscher may be small (just 14 pounds!), but she’s packed with love, loyalty, and just the right amount of sass. Chloe is the perfect blend of cozy couch companion and curious little explorer depending on the vibe.

Her foster, Robyn White Photography, LLC, says she’s been a total gem with other dogs and cats, walks like a pro on leash, and takes her job of protecting you from dogs on TV very seriously! She’s sweet, spunky, and full of personality—everything you could want in a sidekick.

Oakley is shell-ebrating another Turtle Tuesday!

This 5-year-old turtle is still looking for a place to land. Oakley’s a calm, curious little guy who loves basking under a warm lamp, gliding through his tank, and munching on leafy greens, and tasty pellets.

🐢 Fun Fact: Turtles don’t have ears like ours, but they can still sense vibrations and low-frequency sounds—so Oakley’s always tuned in to what’s happening around him!

He’s looking for a home that understands the ins and outs of turtle care or is ready to dive in and learn. A clean, filtered tank, a cozy basking area, and a little daily attention are the keys to keeping him happy and healthy.

This is your sign to adopt a little loaf of love – meet Apple Butter. 🍎🧈

Apple Butter is a darling 5-year-old dilute tortie who is basically autumn in a cat: cozy and comforting. She may be a little shy at first, but once she warms up to you? Pure magic. Apple Butter has opened up a lot, welcoming gentle pets on her terms and showing off her warm personality.

Apple Butter is FeLV+ (Feline Leukemia Virus), which means her immune system needs some extra TLC. While FeLV+ cats may have shorter lifespans, they can live wonderfully full lives with the right care and lots of love. She just needs to be your one-and-only kitty in the home or share her space with other FeLV+ feline friends.

If you’re having one of those Monday’s, just take a look at Pepper – you can’t help but smile! 😊

This handsome 2-year-old Mastiff has the softest eyes and biggest heart. Pepper is super sweet and curious about the world around him. He might be shy at first, but once you’re in his circle of trust, he’s all about that snuggle life! Pepper is the perfect mix of playful and cuddly, always ready for a couch cuddle or to show you his toy collection.

Pepper is noted to do well with other dogs and kids and is house trained. When he’s not playing with toys, he enjoys a nice sniffing adventure or walk. He likes being active and showing off his zoomies to his people. You’re in for lots of fun with this cutie around!

Bangs is still waiting... 🖤🤍

Bangs has been at the APL since December – that’s a long time, especially when you're as handsome and charming as he is! This 7-year-old, 14-pound gentleman is all panda-like cuteness with a purr-fect personality to match.

Bangs is friendly, enjoys a nice treat, and loves gentle pets — on his terms, of course. Like any distinguished guy, he appreciates attention but also values his personal space and will let you know when he needs a little alone time. He’s FIV-positive, but don’t let that stop you from falling in love! With regular check-ups, FIV+ cats like Bangs can live long, healthy lives — even alongside other kitties.

💔Columbo is still waiting... and we know his person is out there. This kind-hearted pup has been at the APL since January 25, 2024 — over a year of patiently waiting for someone to see just how special he truly is.

When Columbo first arrived, he was in rough shape — found emaciated and tethered to a pole by our Humane Investigations team. But oh, how he has bloomed! Today, he’s a smart, goofy, incredibly loving dog who just wants to be by your side. He adores walks, chew toys, and snack breaks with his people. He’s a great listener, always has a smile on his face, and will happily lean in for kisses and pets.

His leash manners are on point and he enjoys practicing all of his tricks! He went on a field trip recently and did amazing — calm in the home, sweet as can be, and so happy to be part of someone’s day. Columbo even has a 4-week scholarship for online training with Goodpup to help keep the good times rolling in his new home.

Columbo has so much love to give. One year is far too long for a dog this wonderful to be without a family. Help us change that!

Bark in the Park is back! 🐶⚾️

The Cleveland Guardians invite pups and their people to Bark in the Park at Progressive Field! The first Bark in the Park game of the season is Tuesday, April 22, at 6:10 p.m., as the Guardians take on the New York Yankees.

Dog tickets are $24 and will include a ticket to the game for your dog, a $5 donation to the Cleveland APL, and a dog toy. Human tickets are $35 and will include a ticket to the game, a food buffet, and a Pup Pack presented by Milk-Bone and Pup-Peroni.

Not a fan of waking up early? Love taking naps? Brahma is your guy! 🥰

If you enjoy sleeping in on Saturdays and would like to snuggle with someone handsome every day, you should probably come in to meet Brahma. Don’t worry though, he’s down for a nice walk around the neighborhood or a car ride when it’s time to have some fun.

This 5-year-old, 95-pound gentle giant is all heart and all about the good vibes. He’s the kind of dog who will remind you to slow down, soak in the sunshine, and never say no to a comfy spot for cuddles (or belly rub). He’s mellow, friendly to everyone he meets, and walks like a dream on leash.

Brahma’s ready to trade in the shelter life for a cozy home and a person (or family!) to call his own. If you're into relaxed days, movie nights, and unconditional love from a big ol’ softie, come in to meet Brahma!
