Kooper was the perfect patient during his time at CTAC and quickly won over the hearts of the staff members caring for him. He recovered well following his procedures, and after a successful healing period, Dr. Gareau gave him the all-clear to head home.

The team sent Kooper off with plenty of hugs and well wishes as he began the next chapter of his recovery. We’re happy to report that he is back home enjoying his favorite blankets, plenty of cuddles, and a return to his normal routine.

Patients who undergo an allogeneic bone marrow transplant are monitored closely by the CTAC team throughout their recovery. One potential complication following transplant is graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), an immune-mediated reaction that can occur.

Swipe through to learn more about graft-versus-host disease and the signs our team monitors for after transplant. The immune system is an incredible defender, and understanding how it works is an important part of the transplant journey.

Kooper's family reached out to their breeder to contact potential donor options for him. After DLA testing, a direct brother to Kooper was a perfect match. Bear and Kooper then traveled from Pennsylvania to Chattanooga for Kooper's treatment journey to begin.
The team enjoyed having two handsome, loveable chocolate Labradors to dote on while they were in our care.

Meet Kooper!
When Kooper was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma in February, his family already knew the treatment path they hoped to pursue. Years earlier, their dog Kody underwent an autologous bone marrow transplant with Dr. Suter at NCSU and went on to live a long, beautiful life afterward.
With that experience in mind, Kooper’s family sought out Dr. Suter and the team at CTAC to begin discussing his diagnosis and care plan. Following their initial consultation, the search began for a donor match for Kooper’s bone marrow transplant journey.

Did you know that many studies have explored the positive effects dogs can have on people? Research has shown that even a brief interaction, as short as 10 minutes, can help improve mood and reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of loneliness. Time spent with dogs can also encourage the release of hormones such as dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re celebrating our canine companions for the comfort, connection, and joy they bring through their affectionate nature and unwavering loyalty.
