⚠️ A heads-up from PetMedic Urgent Care: Keep your furry friends safe around the Tennessee River! ⚠️
As the weather heats up and we all enjoy the beautiful Tennessee River, PetMedic Urgent Care in Chattanooga wants to remind all pet parents about potential water safety concerns for our beloved companions.
While a dip in the river might seem like fun, certain conditions can make the water unsafe for pets. We're particularly concerned about:
Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) / Blue-Green Algae: These can appear as green, blue-green, or even reddish-brown scum, mats, or spilled paint on the water's surface, especially in warm, stagnant areas. Even if not visible, toxins can be present. Ingesting water with HABs can be extremely toxic and even fatal to dogs, causing severe neurological and liver damage. When in doubt, keep your pet out!
Leptospirosis: This serious bacterial disease can be found in contaminated water and soil, often spread through the urine of wildlife. Dogs can contract it by drinking or swimming in affected water, especially after heavy rainfall or in marshy areas. Symptoms can range from lethargy and vomiting to severe kidney and liver failure.
Here are some crucial tips from PetMedic to protect your pet:
❌ Avoid areas with visible algae: If you see any suspicious discoloration, foam, or scum on the water, keep your pet far away.
🚫 Prevent drinking river water: Always carry fresh water for your pet and offer it regularly. Don't let them drink directly from the river.
🧼 Rinse thoroughly: If your pet does come into contact with river water, rinse them off with clean, fresh water as soon as possible.
⚕️ Know the symptoms: Be vigilant for signs like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weakness, jaundice (yellowing of skin/gums), increased thirst, muscle pain, or seizures after water exposure.
💉 Consider vaccinations: Talk to your regular veterinarian about the Leptospirosis vaccine, especially if your dog frequently plays outdoors or near natural water sources.
Your pet's health is our top priority! If you suspect your pet has been exposed to contaminated water and is showing any signs of illness, don't hesitate to seek veterinary care immediately. PetMedic Urgent Care is here for those urgent moments when your regular vet isn't available.
Stay safe and enjoy Chattanooga's natural beauty responsibly with your pets!
