April is Heartworm Awareness Month. It serves as a timely reminder of why prevention matters for our dogs and cats.

🦟 Just one bite from an infected mosquito can lead to heartworm disease, a serious condition that affects the heart, lungs, and blood vessels — and the damage can be permanent.

Prevention is safe, simple, and essential. Speak to your vet about how to keep them protected.

Regular vet check-ups are an important part of keeping our pets healthy. They help detect early signs of illness that may not be obvious to owners, monitor ongoing conditions, and give you the chance to discuss any concerns with your vet.

Take a look at what a general physical exam involves with Dr. Russell Chandler from Mount Pleasant Gelenggang and our star patient Maverick. 🐾🐶

If your pet is due for a check-up, we’re here to help!

How’s your pet shaping up?

🔍 Can you feel their ribs easily?
👀 Is there a visible waistline from above?
⬆️ Do you see an abdominal tuck from the side?

Here’s a quick guide:
1. Very Thin: Ribs, backbone, and pelvic bones are prominent, with little to no fat covering. The waistline is dramatically defined, and the tummy shows a severe abdominal tuck.
2. Underweight: Ribs are easily felt and slightly visible with minimal fat covering. The waistline and tummy tuck are sharply defined.
3. Ideal: Ribs can be felt through a thin layer of fat. The waistline and tummy tuck are visible, with smooth, gradual curves.
4. Overweight: Ribs are covered with a thick fat layer, requiring finger pressure to feel. The waistline is not apparent, with a slight tummy tuck.
5. Obese: Ribs can’t be felt under a thick fat layer. The abdomen is distended and hangs down, while the waistline bulges outward.

Maintaining a healthy body condition is essential for supporting your pet’s mobility and long-term well-being. If you’re unsure where they stand, or if they’re outside the ideal range, be sure to consult your vet for expert guidance!
