✨️🔦 Patient Spotlight 🐠🐦
We have one of our favorite birds in this week - A kōtare or kingfisher! 👑

Found in a member of the publics yard, we believe that he has survived both environmental / secondary poisoning, followed by a cat attack while in this vulnerable state.

A little dazed, lethargic and on the lighter side for their species. (45 grams!)
But very much still has that fighting spirt 🥊

Recovering incredibly well eating some freshly caught king fish from the Coromandel brought in by one of our incredible volunteers and decimating at least 20 crickets a day! 🦗

Lil bud has also been passing a pellets, always a good sign!

It's an expensive diet for a gorgeous little bird!

Protect Access to Veterinary Care for Birds in New Zealand

IMPORTANT!

If this goes through - Avian Empire, Flock and many other bird rescues will no longer be able to continue operation as we currently do.

We cannot ethically operate without the approval to dispense immediate pain medication to the animals we received.

This will KILL many birds! Many birds we receive come in with shock or are critical condition.

The extra handling and travel time for birds in pain will kill the animal's we are trying so hard to save and rehabilitate.

This proposed legislation goes against both our DOC permit and our do no harm oath - which clearly state no unnecessary transport, handling or stress is to be allowed.

It's short sighted and unethical.

An update on our Korokoro duck, Jeanette!

She has a small bumble on her foot that's getting better and is getting to know our other ducks.
She's incredibly sweet!

Keen eyes may see we've clipped her wings, this is just so she can recover in the yard instead of keeping her inside 24/7 - or having her fly back to the car park.

Completely harmless and her flight feathers will come back next molt! Though we hope she'll decide to stay by then, she's already pretty keen on the free food.

Duckling season is early this year, but Sprinkles was earlier! 🦆🐣

Sprinkles 🎊 came into the rescue about 3 weeks ago - and has clearly grown a lot in such a short time compared to our new intake Cupcake 🧁

It's crazy how fast these cuties grow

Happy World Parrot Day! 🦜

Here's a little showcase of some of our brightest patients we've had, it's incredible the range of colors these types of birds wear!

We'd also like to inform any parrot parents that we offer beak/nail trimming and bird-sitting in a seperate part of the hospital. If you ever want to enquire - shoot us a message and we'd be happy to discuss details. :)

The muscovy in Korokoro has been apprehended! If you're following our Facebook you'd have seen that we'd reveived a few reports of this girl sitting in a carpark not too far from Flock. 🚗

She took a few days to catch, even at one point sitting on a rescuers car while avoiding a trap borrowed from the SPCA.

She's now at our hospital, resting and eating some duck pellets.
She's got an injury to one of her legs but otherwise is very alert and seems to be in good spirits as long as she's got food.

We've named her Jeanette. :)🦆
