SOOTY IS HOME â AFTER MISSING TWO YEARS!
Please keep your furbabyâs microchip details up to date. This is a story of whyâŚ
Sooty, a big handsome tuxedo cat, had been living rough in an industrial area of Porirua for quite some time. Every evening, Iâd drive over and feed him when things were quiet and calm. He got used to this quickly & would always appear when i got there.
He was scared and kept his distance, but something about him told me he once belonged to someoneâthat he wasnât born to this life.
Bit by bit, he let me get a little closer each time. Finally, just a few days ago, he let me slowly gently scratch his head while he ate with me sitting beside him.
The next night, he allowed me to scan himâand I was so happy to find he had a microchip! Even better, it was registered, and all the contact details were current. Yay!
I called the number, and his family was stunnedâheâd been missing for two years.
They never thought theyâd see him again after he leapt from their first-storey balcony and disappearedâ3.7 km from where he was now found.
They were thrilled, rushing down with his carrier and a box of his favourite hand-fed treats.
But Sooty didnât remember the treats or the carrier,
He didnât come running when he heard their voices, and the shake of the treat bag didnât get his attention.
After two years, a cat can change.
He was cautious. He knew now that I had a plan to catch himâand the trust I had built started to slip. He was constantly watching his back, surrounded by strays and wild cats, and now⌠facing capture.
It took two more nights of quiet patience.
I sat with him, talked softly, fed him dinner, and gave him gentle head pats.
Then, when the moment was right, I scruffed him gently and carried him to the top-loading carrier waiting nearby.
He didnât fight. Not once.
I always believed he wouldnâtâbut doing it right was crucial. One wrong move, and I might have lost him for good.
And thenâin that carrier, finally safeâSooty relaxed.
He pushed back into my pats for the first time.
It felt like he only tolerated touch to get the food previously âbut now, finally, I saw him soften.
He remembered what it felt like⌠to be safe.
