WE DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP!

Maggie’s journey started in the most heartbreaking way. Surrendered to the pound while pregnant, she was scared, confused, and alone. When she arrived in the care of Chance 4 Change on January 21st, Maggie was on the verge of giving birth. We hoped she’d find comfort in her new foster home, but it quickly became clear something wasn’t right. She was restless, unsettled, and showing signs of pre-eclampsia.

Worried for her well-being, we rushed Maggie to the vet, where an ultrasound revealed the heartbreaking truth—her puppies were in severe distress. Faced with a critical situation, we made the decision to proceed with an emergency c-section to save Maggie and her babies.

Later that day, we received the news we’d all been hoping for—Maggie had given birth to 8 healthy puppies. It was a moment of pure relief and joy, one that brought tears to the eyes of everyone who had witnessed her struggle.

However, the days that followed were incredibly overwhelming for Maggie. At less than a year old, she was thrust into motherhood far too soon. On the surface, it seemed she wasn’t ready to be a mother—she rejected her puppies, refusing to feed, clean, or even stay near them. It was heartbreaking to witness. But our dedicated team of fosters immediately stepped in to take over the nurturing responsibilities Maggie couldn’t handle.

Despite our best efforts, it became painfully clear that the presence of her puppies was causing Maggie tremendous stress. She wouldn’t eat, couldn’t settle, and constantly sought refuge outside, as though she needed to escape. As much as we hoped she’d bond with her puppies, we knew Maggie’s well-being had to come first.

In the end, we made the difficult decision to move Maggie to a quiet foster home—somewhere she could focus on her own recovery.

As Maggie began to heal, we discovered lumps in her breasts that immediately raised our concerns. Our hearts sank. We took her to the vet for an urgent appointment, hoping for the best. Unfortunately, our worst fears were confirmed—these lumps were likely mammary cancer. This could have been the underlying reason Maggie rejected her puppies...

In the face of such devastating news, we couldn’t leave any stone unturned. We decided to proceed with x-rays to check for signs of metastasis, sending them to a specialist. We anxiously waited, holding our breath... and then we received the best news we could have hoped for—the results came back negative, the cancer hadn't spread. It was the glimmer of hope Maggie desperately needed.

Since then, Maggie has undergone surgery to remove the mammary cartilage tumors, and she’s received intravenous treatments to shrink any remaining tissue. Every step of the way, Maggie's fosters and our team have by her side, offering the care and love she deserves. Maggie has shown incredible strength through everything, and while her journey hasn’t been easy, we are so grateful to see her fighting through it all.

Maggie’s journey has been one of incredible resilience, but she can’t do it alone. We urgently need your help to cover her veterinary costs. The treatment for her mammary tumors alone has come to $2,999.25 across five visits. As a small rescue, this is a huge financial challenge, but Maggie needed us—and we couldn’t let her down. Your support will help give her the chance to heal and thrive. Every little bit counts, and we are beyond grateful for your kindness.

Together, we can keep supporting Maggie every step of the way!

Bell is a gorgeous, 9 week old, female, Border Collie X.

Good with dogs: Yes.
Good with cats: Unknown.
Good with stock: Unknown.
Good with children: Yes.

Bell's foster writes:

Bell is an exceptionally sweet and gentle little girl, with a heart full of love. She is always eager for cuddles with her humans and enjoys nothing more than snuggling up close to them. Her playful side shines when she’s with her siblings, and the 8 of them can often be found chasing each other around, creating their own little world of fun. Despite her playful nature, Bell is quick to let you know when it’s time to come inside after spending time outdoors. She has a wonderful singing voice at the door, expressing her eagerness to join her humans once again.

Currently, Bell's learning basic obedience and is making steady progress with her toilet training. At night, she peacefully sleeps in a crate with her siblings, finding comfort and security in their company.

Born in the care of Chance 4 Change, Bell has had the benefit of a loving and supportive environment since day one. She was raised by the wonderfully dedicated surrogate mother, Edna, who has played a key role in shaping her into the affectionate, playful pup she is today. Bell is now ready to find her forever family, where she can continue to share her sweetness and love with those lucky enough to bring her into their home.

Wee Wicket, the Tiny Warrior, is FINALLY READY FOR ADOPTION!

Please read carefully and take note of her special needs before applying.

Wicket is a gorgeous 10 month old, female, Toy Poodle X Shih Tzu. She was named by her sponsor because she resembled an Ewok, and what a fitting name it is! Wicket was a brave young Ewok who fought courageously. Like her namesake, Wicket has fought bravely against the odds. When she arrived in care at 12 weeks of age, it was evident that she had multiple health concerns. She wasn’t expected to survive her challenges, but at each step, she proved everyone wrong.

Now, Wicket is a bouncy, sassy ball of energy and is ready for her forever home!

A bit about her needs:

• Wicket is deaf – She understands sign language (doggy made up version) and facial expressions.
• She has Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH) – This is a condition where the cerebellum (the part of the brain responsible for coordination) didn't develop properly, causing balance and movement issues. Wicket has learnt to adapt and can run and play just like other dogs. Apart from a slight bobble-head motion, you'd hardly notice. CH is not progressive.
• Food allergies – Wicket has several food allergies, but we've figured out a diet that is working well for her.
• Separation anxiety – Due to everything Wicket has been through and being deaf, she struggles with being separated from her humans, and this may intensify initially in her forever home as she adjusts.

Due to the above Wicket is unlikely to be able to get medical insurance cover, so this needs to be a consideration when adopting.

What Kind of Home Would Be Best for Her?

• A home that is willing to learn different ways of teaching her.
• A home where someone is with her, Wicket doesn’t do well being left alone.
• A home that understands Wicket is a dog, not a toy, and will continue her training and working on her separation anxiety.
• A home with a calm tolerant dog is a bonus! She loves other dogs, from large dogs to puppies, of all breeds. She is probably a bit over-confident and considers every dog a friend.
• Wicket is not a fan of young children, as their fast movements scare her. Older, calm children may be okay, with gentle interactions and time.
• A family who will provide regular playtimes and walks to help maintain her muscle tone, balance, and coordination.

Wicket will bring so much joy to the right family. She is intelligent, sweet, loyal, funny, and full of confidence when in the right environment.

Everyone who meets her falls in love and they struggle to believe she is deaf.

She sleeps in a crate beside the bed, is toilet-trained, and knows how to chill and play independently when needed. She’s learnt sign language.

She comes to work with me everyday and keeps herself busy while I work. She has a bit of a fan following in the city on our daily walks.

She's great in the car and has been to so many of our events. She definitely knows how to chill and loves going on adventures to the Cafe, beach, bush actually anywhere, so long as you're not leaving her at home.

She will be one of my hardest fosters to part with, but I know there’s an amazing family out there for her.

Oreo is a beautiful, 13 week old, female, Huntaway X Mastiff.

Good with dogs: Yes.
Good with cats: Yes.
Good with stock: Unknown.
Good with children: Yes.

Oreo's foster writes:

Oreo is a gentle little princess with a heart of gold, and she absolutely loves playing with her brother. Her playful nature is paired with a sweet, affectionate side that shines through after a good run around—when she’s ready to unwind, she prefers to curl up on your lap for a peaceful nap. If you’re open to cuddles on the ground, Oreo loves nothing more than snuggling into your neck for a cozy rest in the sun, making her the perfect companion for those lazy afternoons.

Though she can be a bit shy and hesitant around strangers at first, Oreo’s trust is easily earned. Once she sees that you’re friendly, she’ll wag her tail and happily approach for a gentle pat, revealing her loving nature.

Oreo gets along wonderfully with other dogs and enjoys their company. She doesn’t chase cats but is a little cautious around them, giving them space as she figures them out.

Already showing signs of her intelligence, Oreo responds to the command "Sit" and will patiently wait for her treat when asked. She’s eager to learn and loves spending time with her foster family, even sitting by them to watch TV and soak up the quiet moments.

With her gentle and affectionate nature, Oreo is looking for a kind-hearted human who can continue her training while providing her with plenty of love, attention, and fun. She’s the perfect companion for someone seeking a loyal, loving friend to share life’s adventures with. If you're looking for a sweet, affectionate pup who will always be by your side, Oreo might just be the perfect fit.

Kyro is a well-rounded, 4 month old, male, Rottweiler X.

Good with dogs: Yes.
Good with cats: Dog savvy cats.
Good with stock: Known to herd cattle.
Good with children. Yes.

Kyro's foster writes:

Kyro is an intelligent and eager learner, currently mastering basic obedience skills, including loose leash walking. He’s already crate trained, toilet trained, and sleeps soundly through the night. His gentle nature and willingness to please make him a joy to be around.

Kyro is exceptionally social with other dogs and gets along well with dogs of all sizes and ages. Whether it’s playing or simply lounging together, he’s a friendly companion. His calm and placid demeanor also extends to people; he is a loving boy who adores human interaction. While he may be a bit hesitant around men at first, he warms up quickly and becomes affectionate once he feels comfortable.

When it comes to animals, Kyro is fairly laid-back. He’s not bothered by chickens, but he does have a natural instinct to herd cattle. He could happily live with a dog-savvy cat that is confident enough to assert boundaries if needed.

Kyro is not only handsome but also incredibly loyal. He’s great with children and has enjoyed accompanying his foster family to work, where he is well-behaved and enjoys being around new people and experiences. His loving nature and adaptable personality make him a wonderful companion.

Kyro would do best with a family experienced in the Rottweiler breed, who are dedicated to continuing his training.

Some days in rescue are busy from the moment we wake up, and yesterday was one of those days. Six undernourished, worm-infested 4-week-old puppies were brought to our doorstep, and we quickly sprang into action. The puppies needed feeding, bathing, flea and worm treatment, and the tiniest, weighing just 1.1 kg, required an urgent vet visit.

She has a severe worm infestation and requires constant, round-the-clock monitoring as she recovers. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that in a few days, these beautiful puppies will begin to feel less lethargic, allowing their true personalities to shine through.

Meet Marshall (Marshy) the 20 month old little Pocket Rocket!

This sweet and spunky little guy is a delightful mix of Maltese, Miniature Poodle, and Chihuahua, packed full of personality and charm. With his adorable nature and boundless energy, he's sure to steal your heart!

He gets along great with both dogs and cats (though he does chase the cat now and then). Currently fostered in a home with a small dog, a large dog, a puppy, and a cat, he fits right in and loves all the company.

This little guy is a dream:

- Toilet and crate trained.

- He is able to settle down on his own and is currently coming to work with his foster and hanging out calmly in the office.

- Great in the car, so you can take him on all your adventures!

He’s looking for an active family who has the time and energy to meet his needs. He would thrive in a home where someone is around most of the day and where he has another canine companion to play with.

Children would be a bonus and we believe he would thrive in a home with kids who can match his energy.

Even though he is little, he is more than just a lap dog. He needs stimulation and exercise to work his Poodle brain. He also has a coat that requires regular grooming, so this will need to be a consideration.

Jorja’s foster writes:

Jorja is a sweet, snuggly, and fun-loving puppy with a calm demeanor. She loves playtime but is equally content enjoying some quiet moments of affection.

Jorja loves any toy she can chew on, and she’s particularly fond of a good game of tug of war. When it’s time to rest, Jorja happily settles down in her crate for a nap and sleeps soundly overnight. She also travels well in the car, having had plenty of experience with both short and longer car rides.

Jorja has attended several of our puppy cuddle events as well as attending school with her siblings and foster Mum. She loves the social interactions as well having quiet/down times. Jorja has also enjoyed hanging out with a larger dog and puppy in her foster home. She hasn’t shown any interest in cats.

Jorja sits for a treat and is learning to do a puppy down. She waits quietly to be let out of her crate. Her toilet training is going well for her age, she does still have occasional accidents inside.

Jorja sometimes will stand back and observe new situations before fully participating. She loves to greet her favourite people with a wiggly bottom and tail.
She is one sweet girl who will make a lovely addition to your whanau.

Comet is a happy, 10 month old, male, Border Collie X.

Good with dogs: Yes.
Good with cats: Has previously lived with cats.
Good with stock: Unknown.
Good with children: Yes.

Comet’s foster writes:

Meet Comet – a relaxed, soft-hearted boy who loves snoozing in the sun or soaking up the smells on a walkabout. He enjoys a good cow hoof and will be entertained for hours with one.

Comet is happy to occupy himself between walks and spends plenty of time sleeping in his favourite spots. He loves visiting new locations, especially anywhere with dogs. Anywhere he can sniff new smells is his happy place. He loves to run around playing chase with other dogs but is respectful of the golden oldies and gentle with puppies and small dogs.

Comet’s personality and behavior is very laid back for a young dog. He can be cautious meeting new people but warms up in no time. He is extremely patient and gentle with kids (including toddlers). He doesn’t jump or slobber and will wait calmly while they pat him. He has been introduced to the city life and hasn’t had any issue with large numbers of people or strange noises and experiences.

Comet is housetrained and knows how to use a dog door, although he prefers to go when out on walks. He can be a bit too enthusiastic when walking so a front clip harness is recommended and more training is needed. He has not had crate training but happily sleeps on the floor or dog bed. He is food motivated and knows basic commands like sit and lie flat but is still working on consistency.

Comet would suit a household where someone is around most of the time, or one with another dog to keep him company. He’d thrive in a home with children as this was his prior living situation.

If you are interested in adopting Comet and own your own home then please complete our adoption application form - https://airtable.com/apptS9QFkdVrQm2su/shrXmMrksf6Ci8dYQ

Lola is a gorgeous, 8 week old, female, Border Collie X.

Good with dogs: Yes.
Good with cats: Unknown.
Good with stock: Unknown.
Good with children: Yes.

Lola's foster writes:

Lola is an absolute sweetheart with a lovable, playful nature that’s bound to capture your heart. She’s a little adventurer, always discovering new ways to keep things entertaining. Whether it’s playfully swiping a sock or sneaking off with her sibling's treat, Lola brings endless fun and laughter to the home. Despite her playful mischief, she’s also incredibly affectionate and enjoys being close to her people, always ready for a cuddle or some extra attention.

Lola has a great sense of when it’s time to settle down. She knows exactly when it’s bedtime or when it's time to hop into the car, and she’ll quickly dart out of the way with a little wiggle, as if she’s got somewhere better to be. She’s got a touch of sass and a whole lot of independence—like she’s the one calling the shots!

Lola is currently learning basic obedience and is making great strides with her toilet training. At night, she peacefully sleeps in a crate with her siblings, finding comfort and security in their company.

Born in the care of Chance 4 Change, Lola has had a great start in life, surrounded by the care and guidance she needed. Raised by the wonderfully dedicated surrogate mother, Edna, Lola has been nurtured with love and patience, which has shaped her into the sweet, spirited pup she is today. We thought we had sponsors but they have sadly fallen through...

CAN YOU HELP US?

Our foster writes:

Photo 1: Red collar (male) - He has a playful love for tug-of-war, especially with towels and blankets, often getting completely wrapped up in the fun. A true foodie, he has an insatiable appetite and will eagerly gobble up any treat in sight. His climbing skills are impressive; he loves to scale piles of blankets or anything that resembles a mountain, happily perching on top to survey his kingdom. When he's not climbing, he's playfully chewing on his siblings' legs and ears, or enjoying cuddles with his foster mum.

Photo 2: Blue collar (male) - This rascally little fellow is always on the lookout for food and attention from people. He doesn’t mind getting himself into a few prickly situations if it means he can get closer to his humans or a tasty snack. Inquisitive and adventurous, he's always exploring and finding new ways to satisfy his curiosity, no matter the challenge.

SPONSORING A PUPPY IS A GREAT WAY TO DIRECTLY HELP A RESCUE ANIMAL WITHOUT NEEDING TO FOSTER OR ADOPT.

A sponsor gets naming rights, a weekly update and photos.

Can I meet the puppy?
Yes. We can definitely arrange a meet and greet.

What does it cost?
$150.

What does the money cover?
- 1x PARVO vaccination.
- Microchip.

- Worm treatment.

How do I sign up?
Be the first to comment "I'll be your sponsor" on the chosen puppy's photo and we'll be in touch.

As a registered charity, we can provide donation receipts for New Zealand tax claims.
