WE DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP!
Maggie’s journey started in the most heartbreaking way. Surrendered to the pound while pregnant, she was scared, confused, and alone. When she arrived in the care of Chance 4 Change on January 21st, Maggie was on the verge of giving birth. We hoped she’d find comfort in her new foster home, but it quickly became clear something wasn’t right. She was restless, unsettled, and showing signs of pre-eclampsia.
Worried for her well-being, we rushed Maggie to the vet, where an ultrasound revealed the heartbreaking truth—her puppies were in severe distress. Faced with a critical situation, we made the decision to proceed with an emergency c-section to save Maggie and her babies.
Later that day, we received the news we’d all been hoping for—Maggie had given birth to 8 healthy puppies. It was a moment of pure relief and joy, one that brought tears to the eyes of everyone who had witnessed her struggle.
However, the days that followed were incredibly overwhelming for Maggie. At less than a year old, she was thrust into motherhood far too soon. On the surface, it seemed she wasn’t ready to be a mother—she rejected her puppies, refusing to feed, clean, or even stay near them. It was heartbreaking to witness. But our dedicated team of fosters immediately stepped in to take over the nurturing responsibilities Maggie couldn’t handle.
Despite our best efforts, it became painfully clear that the presence of her puppies was causing Maggie tremendous stress. She wouldn’t eat, couldn’t settle, and constantly sought refuge outside, as though she needed to escape. As much as we hoped she’d bond with her puppies, we knew Maggie’s well-being had to come first.
In the end, we made the difficult decision to move Maggie to a quiet foster home—somewhere she could focus on her own recovery.
As Maggie began to heal, we discovered lumps in her breasts that immediately raised our concerns. Our hearts sank. We took her to the vet for an urgent appointment, hoping for the best. Unfortunately, our worst fears were confirmed—these lumps were likely mammary cancer. This could have been the underlying reason Maggie rejected her puppies...
In the face of such devastating news, we couldn’t leave any stone unturned. We decided to proceed with x-rays to check for signs of metastasis, sending them to a specialist. We anxiously waited, holding our breath... and then we received the best news we could have hoped for—the results came back negative, the cancer hadn't spread. It was the glimmer of hope Maggie desperately needed.
Since then, Maggie has undergone surgery to remove the mammary cartilage tumors, and she’s received intravenous treatments to shrink any remaining tissue. Every step of the way, Maggie's fosters and our team have by her side, offering the care and love she deserves. Maggie has shown incredible strength through everything, and while her journey hasn’t been easy, we are so grateful to see her fighting through it all.
Maggie’s journey has been one of incredible resilience, but she can’t do it alone. We urgently need your help to cover her veterinary costs. The treatment for her mammary tumors alone has come to $2,999.25 across five visits. As a small rescue, this is a huge financial challenge, but Maggie needed us—and we couldn’t let her down. Your support will help give her the chance to heal and thrive. Every little bit counts, and we are beyond grateful for your kindness.
Together, we can keep supporting Maggie every step of the way!
