Spray the coat with a detangling lotion, ensuring that you saturate all tangled areas. Let the dog sit for 5 or 10 minutes before you start working on his coat. Using a slicker brush and a matting comb, start at the bottom of his legs and work in very small sections at a time, taking the coat in layers. Brush the coat up and then down to loosen the mats, alternating with the matting comb. It is important that all mats be combed out before the bath because shampoo gets caught in them and is hard to rinse out. Also, water tends to tighten a mat, and drying shrinks it into a tighter knot. So you can see what a mess you'll have if you fail to comb out mats prior to bathing.
Demitting should never be torturous for the dog. Dogs have different degrees of tolerance. Some dogs do not seem to mind the tugging and pulling involved, while others get extremely upset with just the slightest degree of pulling. Demitting should never cause a dog severe stress. If the dog does not accept dematting, or if it is impossible to remove the mats, the groomer should get permission from the owner to shave the coat down with a #10 or #7 blade. When the new coat comes in, the dog should be groomed on a regular basis so it does not get severely matted again. Dogs who do not tolerate combing easily should be groomed on a 3 to 4 week schedule or sooner.
