Cats Protection League Canterbury - NZ

Cats Protection League Canterbury - NZ We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome stray, abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens and assist with desexing and urgent veterinary fees where cost is an issue.

Established in 1971, incorporated in 1973, and now a charitable trust, the League is a registered charity dedicated to relieving pain and suffering in cats and kittens in Canterbury, New Zealand. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome stray, abandoned and surrendered cats and kittens and help where we can. If you are interested in adopting a cat or kitten, please ring our cattery on 03-3840006, option

1 or email [email protected], to discuss and/or to make an appointment to view those available. The cattery is situated at 14 Charlesworth Street, Woolston, Christchurch and is open from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and from 11am to 2.30pm on Sunday and Tuesday to Friday. It is closed on Mondays and Public Holidays. Our office is also situated at 14 Charlesworth Street, Woolston and is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays). They can be contacted on 03-3840006, option 2 or by email [email protected]. Along with general advice our office provides the following services:

- We take in stray, abandoned and surrendered cats and kittens by way of a wait list although we assist in emergency situations as soon as possible.

- If your cat requires urgent veterinary treatment we can assist with vet fees where cost is an issue, including allowing you to pay off treatment in some circumstances.

- We run a desexing programme called the Feline Fix where we try to get as many cats desexed as we can. Discounted and subsidised prices are available to community service card holders and people with a low income at selected vets around Canterbury.

- We run a lost and found service. We encourage any pet owners who have lost their cat to list them on the page Lost Cats Christchurch, Trade Me and www.animalregister.co.nz.

- We hire out trapping and holding cages. The fees are $5 for trapping cages and $10 for holding cages plus a refundable bond of $20. As a charity we also appreciate donations of food and goods for the cats and of course money. Food and goods for the cats cat be dropped off at our cattery or office at 14 Charlesworth Street in Woolston during our opening hours listed above. Cash and eftpos donations can also be accepted there or they can be made to our bank account 02-1259-0057270-000 or via our givealitte page; https://givealittle.co.nz/org/cplcats

Another wonderful update from Tofu's owners:
Just thought I’d provide a wee update on our sweet girl Tofu (named Jasmine when she was surrendered to CPL)
We’ve had Tofu for 5 years now, we got her when she was already 6 years old but she’s such a small and energetic cat many people still mistake her for a kitten! Tofu lives the life, the only dependent in a dual income home she’s definitely spoiled. Tofu had some health issues when we first got her but she’s such a trooper and that all seems to be the past now.
Just wanted to let you know how well she’s doing, how much we love her, and to say thank you for all the work you do.

We received another wonderful update on Golden Years boy Chesney:
Chesney has had no sick days in a long while. WeI recently changed his food and reduced what we were feeding him. He's super mischievous but he's super good. Most nights we give him a cheeky wee snack.
My partner recently took this photo while I had a nap. He said Chesney had walked around with it on his head for a while. Like a princess practicing posture he kept it on his head for around 5 minutes.
Thank you for letting us spend this time with him.

One of Casey’s favourite spot to hang out is on our protected window sill.
As our cattery cats are not let outside, we had all of our windows fitted with outside cages so we can still have a nice breeze and the cats can stay nice and secure on our property 🥰

FOUND IN OPAWA

This black DSH male cat came into CPL care on Sunday 9th November 2025 after being found in the Opawa area.

He is a young adult or possibly older teen, likely desexed (will confirm once he's been seen by the vet) but not microchipped. He is very friendly and easy to handle, so he has certainly been someone's pet.

If this cat belongs to you or you have some information that could help, please contact the Cats Protection League on (03) 3840006, selecting option 1.

Lovely to receive an update on Fenella and her son Freddie who were adopted early last year.
They are both doing really and are still good friends. It's amazing how affectionate and friendly Freddie is now after the scared little boy he was when we got him 20 months ago, although Fenella still lets him know she is his mother! Fenella is still a real delight. They are both still very energetic and are very entertaining chasing each other all around the house and section.
