Today was a great learning day for me. Another day on the tools practicing my trimming and got to see an application of these composite shoes. The materials are more flexible than steel shoes so they reduce the concussive forces and also offer frog support. They are glued on so less invasive than nails and can usually go for 2 or 3 refits. There are quite a few different types available and these particular ones are 3D printed here in NZ to fit the horses exact hoof measurements. You can even pick the colour! Check out GG 3D for more info

Today I helped move this gorgeous boy to a new grazing. He had previously been a bit tricky to load and hadn’t done much floating recently but he was actually super and very quickly confidently loading with no stress.
Transported provided by Horse Uber Auckland a new service for owners without access to a float for local trips or moving horses to places where access is difficult for a big truck.

Although your horse may be doing less work during winter massage can be really important at this time of year. It can help with problems associated with the cold weather like decreased circulation, more time spent stabled or navigating slippy muddy paddocks. Massage and bodywork in winter:
- Boosts circulation
- Accelerates healing from muscle tweaks from sliding in muddy paddocks
- Primes muscles for an increase in workload with spring around the corner
- Identifies any tight or weak areas which need to be factored into upcoming season management and training plans
Get ahead and get your horse treated before their workload ramps up in Spring

I’m always telling clients to take regular photos of their horses as when you see them daily it’s hard to notice small changes.

Top is Vita the day she arrived and bottom is today just over 2 weeks later. Yes she’s muddy and scruffy right now, but that’s just a quick grooming job. I’m just happy to see her relaxed in the paddock, instead of on high alert all the time and starting to let down a bit.

She’s quite a fine girl so aiming to bulk her up a bit before starting work. She has only been on a small hard feed, supplemented with a vitamin and mineral balancer, mostly lots of hay, baleage and out in a herd on a big hill paddock.

July has been a bit quiet on the work front as I took some time off in the first half of the month and it’s felt like winter has really hit. Still had plenty of horses and ponies enjoying the balance pads, the arrival of my Golden Girl Vita and Angel got a flash haircut. I feel ready for spring time now!
It’s also a great time to book your horse some bodywork to make sure they’re feeling good with Spring around the corner

This is such an easy one to set up, just line your poles up end to end. See how the horse has to lift their legs up and across to step over the poles.
I like to start with the horse in hand and then progress to ridden.
The next stage is to raise the poles to encourage more of a lift of the limbs but as Grayson was rehabbing from a stifle ligament injury we kept the poles low. These kind of controlled lateral movements particularly of the hind legs help to build and strengthen the stabilising muscles and is a great tool to add to your horses training

I’m a little bit late with posting my June round up but here goes
1 Grayson went home after his rehab stay with me
2 Not strictly work but I enjoyed some amazing views trekking Smitty's Ridge when a non horsey friend wanted a horse trek for her birthday
3-5 Tama came to stay for most of the month and although my posts highlighted the fun we had jumping the reality was we spent most of the time doing things like in hand poles, hacking and flatwork
6 I got a bit obsessed taking photos of him as he was looking so good!
7-9 Some of my lovely clients who appreciated their massages and balance pad work
10 The highlight for me was a day showjumping Tama before he went home

In light of the current strangles outbreak I will be implementing a few extra biosecurity measures.
- hands washed and sanitized between all appointments
- my equipment will be washed and sanitized between appointments
- My outer layer of clothing will be changed between locations
- I will check in the day before your booking that your horse and all others on the property are not showing any signs of infection

Things to look out for include
- fever (often the first sign)
- thick nasal discharge
- swelling around the jaw
- lethargy and low appetite and /or not drinking
- a cough

Any concerns please do get in touch and if in doubt we will reschedule.

Had to buy this photo of Tama at Brookby as you can see a big smile on my face! You wouldn’t guess this round actually wasn’t going that well, I was just having a great time out there on the best overgrown OTTB around. Looking forward to the next one.

Thanks Brooke Burt for trusting me with your boy

Such a fun time yesterday showjumping with Tama. He went very green in his first round but the second was lovely. It’s all still quite new to him and easy to forget sometimes he’s only been out of racing less than a year! It’s also been a long time since I did any regular showjumping so lots to work on, but I was so happy with how we went and grinning from ear to ear at the end.

Thanks to brooklyn for trusting me with her gorgeous giant boy and Brookby Showjumping and all the sponsors for putting on a great day
