Helpful advice from our staff and final year vet students to keep your horses cool during this heat wave ☀️

☀️ Heatwave Horse Care ☀️ from the Soft Tissue Elective Students ✨

Hot weather can put horses at risk of dehydration, heat stress and exhaustion - especially older horses, overweight horses, foals, and those in work.

To help keep your horse safe during the warmer temperatures:

🚰 Ensure constant access to fresh, clean water
🌳 Provide shade and good ventilation
🕖 Exercise during cooler parts of the day
💦 Hose horses down after exercise and allow them to cool properly
🧂 Consider adding electrolytes to feed
👀 Monitor closely for signs of heat stress, including increased respiratory rate, lethargy, weakness or reduced appetite

If you are concerned your horse may be struggling in the heat, contact your veterinary surgeon promptly.

What a fantastic afternoon we had at Aintree last Friday! 🐎

A huge thank you to all of the wonderful horse owners who joined us for our Leahurst Equine client event. It was brilliant to see so many familiar faces and spend the afternoon sharing knowledge, catching up and enjoying such a great atmosphere together.

We were incredibly proud to showcase the expertise within our team, with fantastic talks from our amazing speakers:

Our clinicians delivered engaging and practical talks covering parasitology, gastric ulcers, transporting sick and injured horses, tendon injuries and rehabilitation, and foals — including when to call the vet.

We are also extremely grateful to our sponsors, Hestevard and Audevard UK, whose support helped make the event possible.

To top it all off, we enjoyed some gorgeous food, a sunny afternoon at the races, courtesy of the Jockey club, and, yes… even the bar opened! 👀🍾

We’re recruiting! Join the Leahurst Equine team 🐴

We have an opportunity for a Temporary Accounts Administrator to join our wonderful, hardworking, friendly Equine Hospital administration team on a temporary basis for 3–6 months.

This role will provide important administrative and financial support within Leahurst Equine Hospital, helping with accurate invoicing, payment processing, insurance/admin queries, debt follow-up and excellent client care. The successful candidate will work closely with our clinical, nursing and administration teams to help keep our hospital accounts and administration processes running smoothly.

We’re looking for someone who is organised, confident with administration, has good attention to detail, and can communicate sensitively and professionally with clients.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience in a busy university equine hospital environment, working as part of a supportive and welcoming team.

📍 Leahurst Equine Hospital, Neston
⏰ temporary post: 3–6 months
💼 Accounts / administration / customer service focus
⏰working hours - ideally fulltime between the hours of 8-6pm but will consider part time applicants.

The field is taking shape nicely for an informative afternoon of equine talks from our experienced vets, including specialist surgeons and medicine clinicians.

The card includes talks on tendon injuries and rehabilitation, preparing for foals, managing gastric ulcers, parasite management, and transporting sick or injured horses.
