Our vet Meg was called to lance an abscess on a dairy cow 🐮 we're sure this lovely lass felt instant relief from having it all drained and thoroughly flushed out to remove all of the nasty bacteria.

Did you know that providing enrichment toys (such as these straw feeders) can improve growth rates, lower stress, and reduce cross-sucking in calves? 😄

Other examples include broom heads, brushes and beach balls. They can also help calves adapt to changes and stressors, setting them up well for moments of transition (e.g. weaning, calving) in later life 👌

With the recent warmer weather, the Nematodirus risk in parts of Cheshire and Shropshire has risen to 'Very High', according to the SCOPS Nematodirus forecast.
For those earlier lambers with 6-8 week old lambs at grass (especially if out on pasture grazed by lambs last year), drenching with a white wormer (1-BZ) is advisable.

This Highland Stirk had been bullied and 'raked' (scraped their horns on him) by his pen mates 😖 Resulting in a big swelling on one side that was full of bloody fluid and was very bruised.
The Stirk was okay just feeling very sorry for himself and stiff.

Isobel administered pain relief, anti-inflammatories and a recovery pen to himself for plenty of rest 💉💊
The client has been advised to monitor for signs of infection as a result of the bruising, such as being off feed, lethargic and not drinking 👀

Ben celebrated his birthday yesterday 🥳 and in true farm-vet style his day was chock-a-block with farm calls 🐮

Smithills Open Farm treated Ben to a lovely surprise when he arrived which made his day - thank you all 🎂

Our vet Meg has recently completed one of her vaccine drives, injecting sheep and goats against colostridial diseases 🐑 There will be another vaccine drive due in a week or two, if you are interested in vaccinating your flock, please discuss this with your vet 📱

⚠️ B I R D ⚠️ F L U ⚠️

Following the detection of Avian Influenza in wild and housed birds in Cheshire and the Wirral, mandatory housing measures for all birds will come into force on Sunday 16th February for keepers in Cheshire, Merseyside, and Lancashire.

This is in addition to the housing order already in force for birds in other parts of the country, including Shropshire. All captive birds (including small backyard flocks or aviary birds) must be housed securely and with consideration of their welfare.

You can check if you are in a Surveillance or Protection Zone (where additional rules regarding movement of birds and bird products apply) by visiting the interactive map below.
