CAN EVERYONE SHARE THIS PLEASE?

As we head towards bonfire night we no concentrate on making people aware that hedgehogs see them as ready made homes so many get burned alive every year , we want to make everyone aware of this and urge them to check the fires before they are set alight.
If you are unable we can get someone to do it for you but it will need to be on the day .

Remember the two tiny hoglets found outside Biggar Dental Practice? Well, today these little girls returned to Biggar and were released into a lovely garden! 🥹🌿

From tiny hoglets needing help to little hedgehogs ready for the wild. 💚

Had a few questions about fostering so have pulled this off our application forms.

About Foster Caring
Becoming a Foster Carer for a wild animal comes with the responsibility to ensure first class care is given. We expect that all instructions provided as part of the Hedgehog's care plan are followed and daily updates should be provided on the Hedgehog's development/progress via our record keeping protocols.

It should be noted that all Hedgehogs in our care will have the ultimate care plan outcome of going back out to the wild. They are not pets, and are very shy prey animals, who whilst wonderful to look after as per the joy of having an interaction with an animal you would otherwise not get to see up close, their right to be wild and to express natural behaviours must be respected.

Types of Foster Care
The four main types of foster care we're looking for are detailed below but we are happy to discuss possibilities with potential Foster Carers.

Full training and support will be given throughout your fostering journey.

1. Indoors - in home/heated room - in hutch
- The Hedgehog is housed in an appropriate hutch which either you or we will supply
- It will most likely also have an electric heat pad for at least some of it's stay with you
- Ordinarily this fostering type is undertaken in a room in your home which is kept at a temperature of between 16 - 20 degrees
- A source of natural daylight should be available
- Daily cleaning and weighing will be required- The room must generally not be used for anything else, such as working at home, as the Hedgehog must have a space which is quiet
- Non smoking households only, no dogs, cats or unsupervised children should have access to the room
- Be aware that even when their hutches are kept immaculate as expected, there may inevitably be a slight smell from having a hutch in your home, however none of our Foster Carers have indicated having any concern with this over the years we have been engaged in fostering

2. Indoors - in shed/garage/garden building - in hutch
- The hedgehog is generally housed in a larger type of our hutches which either you or we will supply
- It will either not have a source of external heat or may have heat pads which are microwaved and changed 6 hourly in certain circumstances.
- A source of natural daylight should be available
- Daily cleaning and weighing may be required (less frequent if the hedgehog is hibernating)
- This type of fostering is generally used to acclimatise a Hedgehog to the outdoor temperatures prior to release, or can be used for over wintering, if the Hedgehog is unable to be released for some time. Whilst the hutches we use are outdoor hutches, we don't foster in hutches outdoors as it is simply not great fun for you to be out in the rain providing support to the Hedgehog.

3. Indoors/Outdoors - in shed/garage/garden building or garden pen - free roaming (escape proof)
- The hedgehog is generally housed in a Hedgehog Hotel or Rabbit Type hutch
- A source of natural daylight should be available
- Daily cleaning and weighing may be required (less frequent if the hedgehog is hibernating)
- Hedgehogs are great escape artists so the area will have to be carefully checked to make sure it's secure
- This type of fostering is similar to situation 2, but provides the hedgehog with greater freedom

4. Outdoors - in secure garden - free roaming (escape proof)
- The hedgehog is generally housed in a Hedgehog Hotel or Rabbit Type hutch
- Daily cleaning and weighing may be required (less frequent if the hedgehog is hibernating
- Secure gardens tend to be walled gardens in the main, as they need to be 100% escape proof including by digging or climbing. Other types of garden area can be considered if not walled, but adaptations may be required to ensure that they do not escape.

🦔 HOGAMAMMAS RESCUE UPDATE 🦔

A little update on what’s happening at Hogamammas.

🚫 We remain CLOSED to new admissions.

Unfortunately, we have absolutely no capacity to take in any more hedgehogs at present. We are struggling with both space and a shortage of foster carers, and we need to make room for the hedgehogs already in our care before we can consider taking in any more.

Our phones are currently switched off, and calls and messages are not being monitored. If you find a hedgehog needing help, please contact another rescue. We will update everyone when we are in a position to reopen admissions.

💙 A little time for me, too

Since starting Hogamammas, I haven’t taken a proper break, and I’m reaching the point where I desperately need a little time to recharge. I’ll be taking a short break to catch my breath and hopefully return with a little more energy. Running a rescue is incredibly rewarding, but it is also relentless, and sometimes you have to acknowledge when you need to step back.

We’re fundraising to improve our rescue facilities, including new flooring, new units and upgrades to make the space better for the hedgehogs in our care. If you have any unwanted items in good condition that we could sell to raise funds, we’d be incredibly grateful.

🏡 URGENTLY NEEDED: OVERWINTERING FOSTER CARERS

This is one of our biggest challenges right now. We desperately need committed foster carers who can offer suitable accommodation and care to hedgehogs over the winter months.

If you’ve been considering fostering and are genuinely ready to take on the responsibility, please get in touch.

We do want to be honest about what’s involved. Overwintering isn’t simply a case of putting a hedgehog somewhere warm and feeding it. It requires time, commitment, daily care, monitoring, record-keeping and a willingness to follow rescue guidance throughout the winter.

Please only apply if you’ve seriously considered what’s involved and are ready to follow through. We’ve had a number of applications in the past that haven’t progressed, and unfortunately, we no longer have the capacity to spend time processing applications from people who aren’t in a position to commit.

This isn’t intended to put anyone off. We welcome genuinely committed people who want to make a difference. However, we desperately need additional space for the hedgehogs in our care, so we need foster placements to progress as quickly as possible.

🦔💚 Henry II’s Release 💚

Henry arrived at Hogamammas as a tiny 66g hoglet after his finders brought him all the way from Arbroath, where they’d been on holiday. He was suffering from fly strike, which was carefully removed, and his recovery began.

Since arriving, Henry has gone from strength to strength. With time, care and plenty of TLC, he grew into a strong, healthy young hedgehog. After spending some time acclimatising in his outdoor run with foster carer Jennifer, Henry was ready for his big adventure!

This evening, weighing a whopping 772g, Henry was released to begin the next chapter of his wild life. 🥹🦔🌿

From a tiny, vulnerable 66g hoglet to a thriving 772g hedgehog — what a journey this little boy has had!

A huge thank you to his finders for going the extra mile to get him help, and to Jennifer for caring for Henry and helping prepare him for life back in the wild. 💚

🦔 Meet Gertrude! 🌿

Gertrude is another little hog we’ve been meaning to introduce!

She had an unfortunate encounter with her finder’s dog, but thankfully, she escaped without any serious injuries. After a short stay with us to make sure she was doing well, Gertrude was ready for her next adventure — a fresh start in a lovely new garden to call her own. 🏡💚

A huge thank you to Emma for fostering Gertrude, Morag for taking her safely to her release site, and Jay for welcoming her into his garden. It takes a team to get these little hogs back where they belong, and we’re so grateful to everyone who helps make it possible! 🦔💚
