Although I am now retired I still think about you all and training dogs. I am seeing so many people using retractable leads I thought I would share my views. I dislike them because they teach the dog to pull spoiling all your work to get loose lead walking. The dog must pull on the retractable lead to get it to extend. When walking on the pavement with it locked to short there is a risk of releasing the button accidently and having your dog run into the road. There is a risk of injury to you and your dog from rope burns or getting tangled. It is much better to use a training line. It can take a bit of getting used to extending it and curling it back up as the dog comes closer but it does not take long to learn.

I get so worried when I see that there are still trainers who use force to train dogs. They say things like the dogs needs to be corrected and do a jerk on the lead yanking at the dog's neck. In my mind this is not training but trying to make the dog understand you can hurt it. If your dog is reactive to other dogs when on lead it is generally because it is afraid of the other dog and lunges and barks to scare it away. When you jerk it you add pain to the fear making your dog even more fearful of other dogs. You need to teach your dog that it needs not fear other dogs instead, get it to focus on you by taking your pet aside giving the other dog room to pass. You ask your dog to sit and focus on you perhaps using the watch cue. There is more to it than that but that is a beginning. Please always seek out force free, fear free positive trainers.

I have had the most wonderful time training people and their dogs. All the dogs and owners have been very special to me. I have now retired from Dog Training. One of the things I regret is not getting a photo of all the dogs so please do send me one. Thank you for choosing me as your trainer.
