It's that time of year again when the little blighters are out in force.

I do check all dogs when i put them in the van but ticks can be easily missed so I suggest checking your dog when it returns home.

It's also handy to keep a tick twister at home so they can safely be removed and to consider a suitable treatment, whether natural or medicated as ticks can carry several diseases.

HEAT WARNING

Walks - week beginning 25th May 2026

I will risk assess each walk appropriately and will carry water and cooling towels. I will also attempt to walk in woodland or shade and near water where possible but if I feel its too hot then I will either cut the walk short or just let the dogs have a sniff around without too much exertion.

How hot is too hot for your dog?

Dogs do not handle heat the same way humans do. They cool down mainly through panting and their paw pads, which means hot weather can become dangerous very quickly.

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of heatstroke.

☀️ 15°C–20°C
Generally comfortable for most dogs

⚠️ 21°C–24°C
Take extra care. Make sure they have shade and water

🔥 25°C–29°C
Too hot for many dogs, especially during exercise or midday walks

🚨 30°C+
Danger zone. High risk of heatstroke

Watch for the warning signs:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Weakness
• Vomiting
• Bright red gums
• Collapse

If your dog shows signs of overheating, move them to a cool place, offer small sips of water, and contact a vet immediately.

Remember:
If the ground feels too hot for your hand, it is too hot for their paws too. Keep walks early morning or later in the evening. Shade, water and rest can save lives.
