I am a 5ft3 woman and I own and handle dogs daily that are much heavier than this.

Dog handling isn’t about size, strength, or gender. It’s about training, understanding the dog in front of you, building a relationship, and having the skills to communicate clearly.

I’ve met plenty of women who handle large, powerful dogs exceptionally well, and plenty of men who struggle. The deciding factor has never been what’s on the end of the lead, it’s what’s between the handler’s ears.

Good training beats brute strength every time.

The start signal and the reward marker, the treat and train beep, the combination of equipment and location for bite work and the building and area within the building that are used for detection.

What do they all have in common?

They all elicit an associated response that is beyond the control of the dog. It’s instant, it just happens.

That associated or classically conditioned response is powerful. If we understand this type of learning we have a powerful tool to tackle behaviour problems, misunderstand or ignore it and we can accidentally create some big problems for ourselves.

Associated learning can bring big emotions, understanding that can be the key to unlocking your dog’s full potential.

A nice full grip doesn’t just look good, it has a sound. Unable to breathe through his mouth but getting as much air in as he can makes Gr**go snort.

The snort is common in biting dogs with full grips and I love it!

In this first clip, he’s won the sleeve and is calmly possessing it; relaxed, confident.

This is a product of strong foundations built slowly, deliberately and incrementally.

Clear start cues, a reliable out, and a solid understanding that when I say finish, the work is done, the excitement dissipates.

Clarity means we can participate in sports whilst having him be part everyday life. Running errands, sat in a cafe, socialising with other people and dogs, all possible because he understands the state of mind he needs to be in and when it’s appropriate to make snorting noises!

Week one with Mika 🖤🐾

Mika is in for day trains after being hit by a car chasing deer, so recall is a big focus for us. But first, we build the foundations.

With hormonal, pain and confidence factors to consider, everything is being taken slowly and at her pace. This week has been about settling in, hand feeding, building trust, and learning she’s safe with me.

Keeva has also stepped in as emotional support Dobermann 🖤

Sometimes progress is softer body language, choosing connection, and beginning to trust. That’s where real change starts.

Gr**go heeling while people clap, whistle and call him away.

Not because it’s flashy but because real life is distracting.
Dogs don’t learn focus in quiet, perfect setups, so we train it on purpose.

This kind of work is essential for future PSA trailing, but it’s just as important for pet dogs too.
If a dog can stay engaged here, they’re far more likely to listen around other dogs, people, and everyday chaos.

Focus is trained, not hoped for. We started at a much lower level, and we continue to build.

This is the type of foundation we work on in classes and training walks. Building calm, reliable dogs for real life.
