To slip lead or not to slip lead πŸ€”

Slip leads are certainly on the rise again, so I felt it was time to reshare this to help people understand their uses! πŸ’š

Slip leads certainly have their place and below are just a few examples! I'm not saying they're bad - I have certainly found them useful in the past with anxious rescues in kennels! However, using them as a tool to train your dog is not what they were designed for.

A well trained dog can wear a slip lead with no pressure at all. However, for a dog who's pulling, this is only going to become a noose. Sure, they might stop pulling, but who wouldn't when they're being deprived of oxygen? 😡

For a reactive dog to become totally restricted at the throat with each lunge forward, yes they might eventually stop barking. But only because every other choice has been taken away from them. This doesn't address why they're worried or reacting. Conflict, frustration, fear, over excitement... We need to know what's going on so that we can ensure the correct training or behavioural support plan is in place. πŸ™ŒπŸ»

To train your dog and change their behaviours, we need to allow them to be comfortable and support them to make better choices over time through training. A slip lead is a quick fix that achieves "results" unethically.

Slip leads are not unkind, but using them to change your dog's behaviour is!

If you're struggling with your dog's behaviour out on walks, please seek help from an experienced professional and make sure you are well suited to their training methods πŸ’š

Billy joined me for a session at People's Park 🌳

What a great little lad, and only 5 months old! The perfect age to get some training and general reassurance πŸ₯°

For our session we worked on:

🐾 Recall skills & how to build them up
🐾 Focus around dogs/ people
🐾 Loose lead basics

It's so much fun to meet at parks or the beach for our 1-1 sessions - how else would your dog's gain the skills you want?! 🀩

If you're interested in booking some sessions, drop me a message πŸ’š
