It's been another busy week in our in house labπŸ”¬.

Our practice lab at Rampisham allows us to perform in house diagnostic tests, speeding up diagnosis and decision making for our vets, thereby allowing rapid and effective treatments to be given to the animals under our care πŸ„ πŸ‚ πŸ‘ 🐐 πŸ¦™ πŸ–.

Our lab techs Georgia and Ella have sent us this video of lungworm larvae found in the faeces of some sick and coughing suckler calves.

Lungworm ('husk') is a common cause of coughing in growing (and increasingly adult) cattle at grass, and can be fatal if not treated. Lungworm larvae are shed in cattle dung, and need mild and damp weather to multiply and infect other cattle through contaminated grazing. Recent weather has been simply perfect 🌑️ 🌦️!

Please be vigilant!

Last weekend was a busy one for on call vet Lara, who is this year's Synergy/The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) intern.

Lara qualified as a vet in July 2025, and she is spending her first year in practice fully embedded within our experienced veterinary team.

Our joint internship programme with The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has been running for 10+ years, and allows our interns to further develop their clinical skills and knowledge post graduation, within the supportive environment of our practice, and with the back up of an experienced colleague at all times. On completion of the internship many interns have stayed on at Synergy, and several are now shareholders in our business.

Last weekend entailed four calvings, one lambing, a sick pig, a sick calf and a very sick downer cow 🩺.

It was certainly busy for Lara and colleague Vicki, with lots of experience coming thick and fast πŸ„ πŸ‘ πŸ– πŸ† !

πŸ“ ⭐ BIRD FLU - IMPORTANT NOTICE ⭐ πŸ“

Due to the escalating number of cases of bird β€˜flu (in both farmed and wild birds) across the country, APHA have introduced mandatory housing measures to protect poultry for all keepers of over 50 birds, and for all flocks who sell or give away eggs (even if they keep fewer than 50 birds). These measures come into force tomorrow - Thursday 6th November. Strict biosecurity measures remain mandatory.

πŸ– International travels to Estonia for Synergy's pig enthusiast Pete Siviter πŸ–

Last week our vet Pete was invited to give a presentation at the VetMed 2025 conference in Estonia! 🎀

Pete's session was titled β€œApproaching the Small Scale Pig Herd: Husbandry, Handling, Clinical Examination and Common Conditions".

Pete's talk was for anyone passionate about pig welfare and hands-on veterinary care - there was a truly international audience of vets, students, and farmers 🌍.

Well done Pete - we couldn't be prouder 😊!

πŸ„πŸ‘ Proud Sponsors of the Churston Fatstock Show! πŸ₯•πŸ¦ƒ

Synergy Farm Health is delighted to support the Churston Fatstock Show, a cherished celebration of local farming excellence πŸ†

These traditional Fatstock Shows highlight the very best of our rural community, with farmers showcasing top-quality livestock β€” from cattle and sheep to Christmas poultry β€” as well as crops, vegetables and produce. The term β€œFatstock” refers to animals specially fattened for market, particularly for meat production, and these events offer a unique opportunity for farmers to present their finest stock and for buyers to bid on premium products. πŸ‚πŸ₯¬

πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”¬ Come and meet our vets Katie and Nick from the Lympstone office, who will be at the show - make sure you pop along and say hi!

We’re proud to stand behind the hardworking farmers who make these events so special

🚨 Sheep Scab Alert 🚨

We’ve had reports of sheep scab in the area again β€” this video was sent to us by our lab technicians who confirmed our vet's suspicions! No wonder sheep are so itchy with these mites burrowing into their skin! 😱 βš οΈπŸ‘

A timely reminder to be cautious when bringing in new stock....
Even the healthiest-looking sheep can carry the mites without showing any clinical signs. 🐏

Prevention is key
βœ… Always isolate new arrivals from your existing flock.
βœ… Consult your vet to confirm treatment requirements.

Autumn calving is very much in full swing across the practice πŸ„ πŸ‚ 🍁 πŸ‚ !

This atmospheric, late night pic was sent to us by last weekend's duty vet Tom. Whilst it may have been a late night call out, what a great outcome 🩺.

This rather substantial Aberdeen Angus x calf was simply too big to be born naturally. He was up and about within minutes of entering the world, and was searching for his first feed before the caesarean operation was complete 😊.

⚠️ We urge all our clients to remain vigilant - Bluetongue has been diagnosed by our vets in recent days ⚠️

These pics are from a suckler cow in South Somerset - showing typical signs of a crusty nose, mouth ulcers, drooling, and sore/painful teats. Other cases have been less obvious - lethargy and a high fever is common.

As you can see from the APHA map, there has been a significant increase in confirmed cases from all over the south west.

Should you notice anything of concern in your livestock please contact us at the earliest opportunity - there is a legal obligation to report such cases. We consider it really important to support APHA by helping track the spread of Bluetongue, as well as building our knowledge of the disease. Confirmation of Bluetongue infection will not place your holding under APHA restrictions.
