Happy 4 year ‘anniversary’ of being a Happyard Helper to Holly! 🥳🎂
Holly started helping at Happyard when she was 14 years old. Now she is nearly 19 and owns Arthur the alpaca with alpaca adjustment with us!
Arthur has always been Holly’s favourite alpaca here at Happyard (I think she is Arthur’s favourite too!), and she bought him from us back in the summer.
I’m sure that if you have ever came to us for an alpaca walk, camping or glamping stay, you have probably met Holly.
Thankyou Holly for everything you do! 🦙💕
A photo of Holly and Arthur 🥰

Week 4 of Happyard’s alpaca of the week.

Today is Skippy.
He is a Male.
🗓️Skippy was born on the 21st of June 2021.
Skippy’s show name is ‘Bride Valley Summer Solstice’ because he was born in the Summer Solstice!
He was also our bottle feed baby, he was fully bottle fed by us.
Skippy won champion junior handler with Isla at Devon County Show 2024, he had to go through a hula hoop, over a seesaw, over jumps, etc. And Isla ended up winning it with him which is the photo we have decided to use! 🥰

🦙Alpaca Fact Friday!

Did you know…
Alpacas have soft, padded feet instead of hooves!
Their two-toed, cushiony feet are super gentle on the ground, which means they don’t damage pastures the way harder-hoofed animals can.
It’s one of the reasons alpacas are considered eco-friendly grazers — light steps, light impact! 🌱🦙

🦙Alpaca Fact Friday!

Did you know….
Alpacas are extremely sociable animals. They must always be kept in herds, so do males.

Male alpacas contently live in large herds without any issues at all. If a male alpaca were to be kept alone it would develop Beserk Male Syndrome.
Beserk Male Syndrome is a psychological condition caused by incorrect socialization, where a male alpaca treats humans as other alpacas, leading to aggressive behaviors like charging, biting, and chest bumping.

Therefore, male and female alpacas must always be in a herd of a minimum of 3. Should one pass away there will be another one so one alpaca doesn’t become lonely.

If one alpaca were to be kept alone but with another livestock species, when it tries to communicate by humming, it wouldn’t receive a hum back.
It would then become lonely and potentially ill.

Alpacas rely on their herd for more than just safety. They communicate with one another using soft humming sounds, body language, and even ear positions! You’ll often see them grazing side by side, resting together, or keeping a close eye on each other’s movements.

Female and male alpaca must never be kept in the same herd. Even if the male/s is castrated.

If you ever see Happyard at an event with alpacas. You will notice there will never be just one on its own. We will always take a minimum of 2!

Happyard

Happyard offer a whole range of fun experiences including riding lessons, be a farmer for a day, meet and care for an alpaca and more! We also run a relaxed campsite with basic amenities. We have a variety of friendly horses including our gentle giant ‘Reggie’ the Shire Horse.

We believe everyone (not just the privileged) should have the opportunity to spend time around animals, horses and alpaca in particular as they offer an amazing calming therapy. We are currently crowdfunding to expand our business to create a barn that will both house more animals (chinchillas, goats, guinea pigs and more!) and provide a function room especially adapted for learning.
