Synergy Rotation, in Dorset. Spent the week looking at young stock respiratory disease and scour. Therapeutics, discussing the best antibiotics for different clinical disease and a trip to the abattoir which was definitely an experience but one that I’m happy I did, as someone that eats meat I think it’s important to know exactly how your meat gets from farm to fork.

🪡 Two surgeons were joking so much they had each other in stitches!
First opportunity to close a wound in a dog. Quite different, to working with equine skin. There is a lot more tissue movement, fat and muscle to work with and a lot less tension. Closed in a simple interrupted pattern. This was super exciting for me and I was really quite happy with how it turned out, just need to work on speed and muscle memory.

Small animal surgery. We have been in small teams of 3 for this rotation which has been ideal as gives us all the opportunity to scrub into surgery. So far we has seen a tracheostomy, caudal left lung removal, pinna mass removal and cardio version.

🩺Internal Medicine Rotation.
Just about to finish up my first ever rotation, took some time to work out the set up but once you get into the swing of it, there are some really cool cases to work up. Here are some of the things I’ve found myself using every single day! ⬅️⬅️⬅️ and Don’t forget
▪️Laptop charger - Teams drains your battery like nothing else.
▪️Headphones
▪️Student card, you need it for just about every door on the QMH
▪️Face Mask
▪️Plenty of snacks, that you can eat cold, there is No Microwave!

What is a Chifney?
Another type of head collar for managing more difficult horses. It’s an in hand bit, going over the tongue and behind the chin. It’s used mainly in the racing industry to handle young thoroughbred that are full of the joys of spring but can become dangerous if not handled correctly. It can also act as an anti- rearing device as the dip in the metal sits on top the tongue. They should be used correctly and with care as can be very sharp on the horses mouth.

Thank you to HN and for the last two weeks of farm ems. Huge number of cases and discussion over the last few weeks, and it’s great to but learned knowledges into practice and see first had surgery. Highly recommend if your looking for more experience in farm animals. They deal with cattle, sheep, pigs and even the more unusual including lamas and camels. They also have a small and equine department if farm isn’t your thing, so there really is loads to see.
