‘The clip hasn’t lasted long at all!’

The change in daylight hours is what triggers the winter coat change and growth -
In the UK, horse’s coats tend to start changing from (roughly) early September and can continue to grow in reasonably quickly through to the winter solstice, at which point the coat growth will slow down.

You’ll find that clips between September-December don’t ’last as long’ as clips done in the New Year. This is because the winter coat is continually growing until the solstice.
Natives/cobs/heavies tend to be on the hairier side, so some may need clipped every 4 weeks (give or take) if you want to keep them neat.
Whereas warmblood/TB/finer types may only need clipped 2/3 times over the whole winter, as they tend to grow a finer coat.

This is a rough guide, not a set in stone rule!
Every horse is different, and there are a lot of factors to consider -
• Age
• Breed
• Coat type (thick/fine/dense/long…)
• Health (Cushing’s Disease, EMS etc)
• Weight
• Workload
• Routine (in/out)
• Or, just like people - they can be hairy/not so hairy, no matter what the breed of horse is!

How often do you clip your horse? Tell me their breed etc and why you chose to do it as often as you do!

To all of my lovely clients & friends,

Earlier this week I said the hardest goodbye to my wonderful and dear Nonno 👴🏼💔
As you can imagine the last few weeks have been tremendously difficult and I have spent every minute I could right by his side 🕊️🤍

I am extremely behind on messages and bookings and I thank you all for being so incredibly patient with me, especially those who have appointments cancelled at the last minute so I could spend more precious time with him.

I will do my best to get back to you all over the next few days and get you booked in as soon as I can 📲
Please remember appointments are limited around my full time work, and other commitments.
Because of this I am still unable to take on any new clients at this time to ensure I can prioritise my existing ones.

Thank you so much for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you and your fur babies soon 💈🐴☕️🖤

Last weekend I had the pleasure of giving the beautiful Denny a blanket clip 💈
It was only her second ever clip & she stood like a rock as if she’d been doing it her whole life 🌟
Absolute credit to her owner Lilly who has done a fantastic job of producing her and doing all the ground work to make sure she is used to clippers and standing nice and still - you make my job so much easier & enjoyable!! 🙌🏼👏🏼
It is so so important for young horses to have good experiences with everything, as it really does set them up for life 🤍

Side note… Den is rising 5 and standing at 17’1 making me look extra tiny…
She reminds me very much of my not so lil lady 🤔 who is absolutely NOT allowed to get that big 🦕🫣🤣

Couldn’t have said it better myself Baxter Equine Services 👏🏼👏🏼‼️

Please take note - we are not superhuman and we are not invincible (although we would like to be! 🦸🏻‍♀️)

I’m sure that most of you have seen this video - it always tends to circulate around clipping season!

If your horse misbehaves - whether it be barging, biting, striking out with front legs, or kicking out with hind legs - you must tell your clipper/farrier/physio/vet/saddler, or any other professional you have employed to handle your horse in any way.

Horses are quick, and strong, and most of us are not super human enough to dodge equine limbs successfully every single time.

If your horse acts in this manner, it is your responsibility as an owner to work with your horse to make it comfortable in whatever situation it is in, or make sure your horse is properly sedated if this is not possible.

Proper sedation is -
• Intravenous sedative administered by a vet
• Domoseden which is an oral sedation which is bought from your vet, and can be administered by yourself - this however doesn’t work for all horses, so you must be sure that it works for yours, and the correct amount is administered in the correct way.

Improper sedation is -
• Sedalin
• Relaquin
• ACP
• CBD/Hemp products
• Magic calmer pastes
• Calming cookies
• Twitching (ear/nose/neck)

I am more than happy to stop a clip (at any point!) if an owner has failed to tell me about a horse’s behaviour, or if I feel it is unsafe to continue for any reason - my safety is the top of my priority list, as if I get injured, then I can’t work.

What’s other professional’s policies? I’d be interested to hear of any experiences you’ve had, and how you’ve dealt with it!

I cannot stress enough how important it is to BE HONEST ‼️
