To close Rabbit Awareness Week, we wanted to highlight some Summer tips and tricks to keep your rabbits safe and comfortable this summer.

1) Keep them hydrated - Providing lots of fresh, clean water is essential. Giving them a few fresh vegetables is also a great way to get more hydration into their diet.

2) Provide shady spots - Whether you have an outdoor or indoor rabbit, it’s important to give them lots of shaded areas where they can relax away from the sun.

3) Regular grooming - this helps them to regulate their temperature, particularly if they have long or thick fur.

4) Regular cleaning - Bacteria flourishes in warm, damp spaces, so clean out your rabbit’s litter and bedding twice a day in particularly hot weather to prevent it from spreading.

It’s Rabbit Awareness Week! A time to shine a spotlight on our fluffy friends.

Have you heard of VHD2? It stands for Viral Haemorrhagic Disease 2 (VHD2) and is a highly contagious and often fatal virus affecting rabbits in the UK. It can spread through direct contact or even via shoes, clothing and insects, which is why vaccination is absolutely essential, even for indoor rabbits.

Catching something early, goes a long way.

The little guinea pig Wilbur came in for a lump removal. He was put under anaesthetic while the team at our Battersea practice gently removed his lump to send off to the lab.
He definitely received lots of kisses and cuddles afterwards.

Out of a walk yesterday and noticed a lot of these grass awns about. We have also had our first patient for this year with one lodged in the ear canal. Please keep vigilant over the next few weeks whilst this years crop of seeds ripens. Check your dog’s feet and ear flaps (the most common place for them to cause trouble). Spotting them before they end up in an awkward location would be a really good idea.

Well, we got some new phones but it appears that there’s some initial issues with weekend set-up. Leamington spa medivet is our 24 hour provider and is definitely contactable even if we aren’t. It’s been reported to our phone service provider.

EDIT It appears that things are working this morning , so that is good. It has also been raised with the upper levels of management.

A new phone system will be installed but there will be some issues whilst this happens. Phone lines will be diverted to our Leamington Spa hospital. This is much needed , please bear with us

You may have seen some very interesting medical news yesterday about a potentially new type of treatment for Alzheimer’s . These new antibody therapies are not strictly ‘drugs’ but are quite incredible. We have 3 available for use in pets and they’ve revolutionised management of arthritis in cats and dogs and skin concerns in cats. They work by getting the body to do the work in treating the condition. I’ve used at least 2 of these this morning alone. The future is already here at vet practices.
