Meet handsome Smudge!

Smudge came to see our vet Lisa after his owners noticed he had a lump in his mouth. A biopsy was taken which showed the lump to be an acanthomatous amyloblastoma, a benign tumour that is painful and can grow quickly eventually making it difficult to eat. This type of tumour not only affects the gum but invades the jawbone as well and surgery to remove the part of the jaw affected is the only cure. Smudge had an outpatient CT scan at another facility to see how extensive the tumour was and help plan his surgery.

Lisa is an RCVS Recognised Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery and was able to perform the surgery on Smudge who has made a wonderful recovery and is now tumour free.

We are delighted to annouce that The Hampshire Vet is now officially an ISFM Gold Cat Friendly Clinic. 😻😻😻

An accredited Cat Friendly Clinic has reached a higher standard of cat care in that the staff:

🐱Understand the needs of cats and make visits to the vet clinic more cat friendly.

🐱Understand how to approach and handle cats gently and with care and respect.

🐱Have good knowledge and equipment to manage the care of cats.

🐱 Will explain your cat’s treatment and recovery clearly and sensitively so that you have a full understanding of what is going on.

The Gold Award is reflective of our separate cat waiting room, dedicated cat consultation room, hospital facilities, and excellent range of equipment.

Why is it that the cutest patients are usually the naughtiest? This gorgeous boy is Terry. He had an unexpected date night with our out of hours team after his mum saw him eat a scrunchie.

Terry had a consultation with our vet Lucy and it was decided that he should be made sick to prevent the scrunchie causing a gastro-intestinal obstruction, which could result in a surgery.

Did you know that we can make dogs sick using either an injection or now with an eye drop? Lucy placed a special eye drops into Terry's eyes and he was sick approximately 10 minutes later. Not only did he produce the scrunchie but also some piece of blanket, an unexpected bonus!

Terry made a rapid recovery after some cuddles and TLC from our nurse Louise. We were delighted to be able to help such a lovely boy.

Looking to pursue your interests and develop your career within a happy and supportive environment while maintaining a good work-life balance with no OOHs?

The Hampshire Vet is a newly established, proudly independent 9-vet small animal practice in Basingstoke. Since opening the doors of our hospital-standard premises in 2023, we’ve had an exciting time; our team has already grown from 3 to 23, including a dedicated night team providing 24/7 out-of-hours support, and we have achieved RCVS accreditation. We were also delighted to win the New Business of the Year Award at The Basingstoke Inspire Business Awards 2024 and to be shortlisted for the SPVS National Veterinary Start-Up Award!

But our plans don’t stop there. We're pursuing RCVS Hospital and ISFM Gold accreditations, expanding our facilities, and considering adding a CT scanner! We also have several new team members joining us in early 2025, and we are looking for a vet, ideally with some experience, to join us on our ongoing journey.

“It has been refreshing to work in a practice with a great culture where vets are given clinical freedom and autonomy, individual strengths and interests are supported, and staff feel valued.” Lisa MRCVS

· A salary of £35,000 to £70,000
· A 4-day week, with just 1:5 weekends and no OOH
· 6.6 weeks holiday, including bank holidays
· CPD encouraged, with certificates supported and
funded
· Private healthcare
· Professional fees paid for RCVS and VDS

📸 🦷 Did You Know? Dental X-rays can reveal what’s hiding beneath the surface! 🦷 📸

While a visual exam is important, some dental issues lurk below the gum line and can’t be seen without X-rays. Here’s what we can uncover:
✅ Fractured roots
✅ Abscesses or infections
✅ Bone loss
✅ Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions (FORLs) – a common and painful condition in cats where the tooth erodes from the inside out.

X-rays allow us to diagnose and treat these problems early, ensuring your pet stays happy and healthy.

Don’t forget, we’re offering 10% off dental treatments this January! Book a dental checkup today to ensure your pet’s smile is healthy inside and out.
