Meet 14-year-old Tilly the labrador, our Golden Pet of the Month!

Owner Suzanne, who shops at Pets at Home Yate, shared that Tilly started her 14th birthday with a gentle morning walk. Suzanne said, “Walks are a lot, lot slower and shorter than the days of old, but Tilly still loves a little plod and a good old sniff along the country lane we live on. She spent the afternoon snoozing in the garden, basking in the sunshine, which she absolutely loves. And probably the best bit—we cooked her a steak for her birthday tea! Tilly is loved as much as ever, if not more, each day by the family."

Tilly earned the title of Golden Pet of the Month after Suzanne entered our competition through an email we sent at the start of her birthday month. If your cat or dog is over seven years old and has a birthday coming up, they could win a Pets at Home goody bag and be our next Golden Pet of the Month too! The team at Vets4Pets Saffron Walden have built a reputation for helping local wildlife.

One of vet nurse Ella’s most memorable rescues is a one-week-old seagull named Chips, who was found stuck down a drainpipe at a local school. With weeks of care, Chips grew stronger until one day he spread his wings and flew off.

Ella says, “Being able to look after wildlife if so rewarding. You want to give them the best chance possible, and when it goes right and they fly away you think ‘I've done something worthwhile.’ Wildlife is not meant to be hand reared, so if you find any injured the best thing to do in the first instance is contact your vet or local wildlife rescue for advice.”

We’ve loved welcoming local charities in our pet care centres to support the Pets Foundation Blue Cross summer appeal.

One of the charities who will benefit from the appeal is CFINE. Beth, pictured, volunteers at the CFINE Community Food Pantry, and recently spent time at Pets at Home Aberdeen raising awareness about the charity - and giving lots of love to our customers dogs.

Nicky from the charity said, “Everyone that came into Pets at Home showed an interest in what we were doing, and we want to thank each and every customer that donates. Donations will go towards helping the beneficiaries of our Human Food Bank to feed and keep their animals in good health. We do not receive many pet food donations and the Blue Cross through Pets at Home provide a lifeline for all the beneficiaries cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs. Thank you.”

This little hedgehog was brought into Vets4Pets Brighouse after being found with a plastic bag stuck around his neck.

The team quickly removed the plastic bag and checked him for injuries and were happy to report he was all okay. They were able to return him to the kind member of public who brought him in, who released him safely back into the wild.

Steph, practice owner at Vets4Pets Bridgehouse, said, “Litter can be life-threatening to wildlife. Please remember to take your rubbish with you and help keep our green spaces safe for all creatures, great and small. If you find a hedgehog in trouble, please contact your local wildlife charity in the first instance for advice.”

Meet 14-week-old Bark Vadar, who wants to remind you to eat your five a day.

After losing her 16-year-old Shih Tzu, owner Zoe found the house too quiet, so she brought home Bark Vadar. Since then, she’s noticed he loves the fruit and vegetable toys from Pets at Home.

Zoe said, “Ever since Bark Vader joined our family, we’ve been taking him to our local Pets at Home in Washington. The first toy he chose was a strawberry because he liked the way it crinkled, and his obsession has grown since then. As you can see, he loves his fruits and veg!"

Who needs a real stick when you can pick up a toy version from Pets at Home?

Meet Brody, a playful four-month-old labrador whose owner Heather, who is a vet nurse, knows the danger of dogs playing with real sticks. When she spotted this toy stick at Pets at Home Redhill, she knew it was the perfect alternative for her energetic pup.

Heather said, “Although sticks can provide lots of fun for dogs in parks, they can create quite serious injuries. Splinters of wood get caught in gums, causing dental abscesses and pain. Sometimes, they can even get wedged across the top of a dog's mouth. Being a labrador, Brody loves to carry things around and chase toys, and this toy stick is the perfect length and weight for him, even as a puppy.”

Sisters Aria and Alana had a great time learning what's involved in looking after a pet when they took part in a My Pet Pals workshop at our Balham store.

Six-year-old Aria has been asking her mum Vanessa if she can get a pet hamster or guinea pig, so for a half-term activity Vanessa booked Aria and four-year-old Alana on one of our free My Pet Pals workshops so they could learn about caring for small furries.

Vanessa said: “I had a pet growing up so I know that having one is a lot of work. It was lovely for the girls to have first-hand experience before committing to getting their own. My Pet Pals was even better than I expected; the girls learned lots of facts about the guinea pigs and hamsters and were able to learn how to handle and look after them. Watching them it felt like my babies are growing up. Aria is still very keen to have her own pet, she is really committed to something she wants.”

Aria thinks she would like to be a vet when she grows up, and said, “It was nice because I got to hold a guinea pig and I learned that they have to be kept together. I’m going to tell my friends to go there because it was brilliant!”

Our two wonderful colleagues Sharon and Lizzie have built our new display 6ft Hutch. This Hutch is great for Rabbits and Guinea Pigs as it provides room for play and for the owner to add lots of enrichment such as herbal forage and wooden gnawing toys.
