Meet Twisty! This handsome boy is doing fantastic after having a cherry eye repositioned. Swipe left to see what his left eye looked like prior to surgery.

Cherry eye is the common term for a pr*****ed gland of the third eyelid. The third eyelid is the membrane at the inner corner of each eye in a cat. The gland is normally tucked down behind the third eyelid and is not visible. When the ligament holding the bottom of the gland becomes loose, this allows the gland to flip up and become an obvious red blip at the inner corner of the eye. Repositioning this gland is done surgically and has a greater than 95% success rate. The gland produces 60% of the tear volume, so putting it back in its normal position reduces the risk of developing dry eye and corneal ulcers.

This was an unusual case we saw at for persistent corneal ulcers and cloudiness. This juvenile male bald eagle had facial nerve paralysis, resulting in an inability to blink either eye. This led to his corneas drying out and ulcerating. We also noticed on his exam that his eyes would fog up with every breath - this is not normal! We suspect his head trauma resulted in a skull fracture causing increased pressure in his eyes with every breath.

Meet Libella ✨ She is rocking her stylish Recovery Vizor like the true queen she is! 👑💗
This brave girl has been battling a stubborn corneal ulcer, and because she kept rubbing her eye, it just wouldn’t heal. But now that she can’t reach it, we’re crossing our fingers for a speedy recovery. 💕✨

Send Libella all the healing vibes! 👁️💪🐾
