A love letter to Burnside Road East
It's been a good ride so far on Burnside Road East.

When we opened Midtown, we chose this stretch of road intentionally. Central enough to serve families from Tillicum, the Gorge, View Royal, and Saanich without anyone having to drive through downtown. Close to Cuthbert Holmes Park and the Galloping Goose. The kind of neighbourhood where neighbours still say hi on the sidewalk.

Being locally owned and operated isn't a tagline for us. It's how we think about every decision. Longer evening hours because that's what working families need. Sunday openings because pets don't stick to a weekday schedule. A team that's part of this community.

Thanks for making us part of yours: (778) 775-8387 or midtownvets.ca.

Victoria doesn't get the heat waves the Fraser Valley sees, but May and June still catch a lot of island families off guard.

A few things worth knowing before the weather turns:

• Pavement along Douglas Street and Blanshard can become hot enough to burn paw pads well before the air feels hot
• Parked cars can reach dangerous temperatures within minutes, even with windows cracked
• Flat-faced dogs, senior pets, and thick-coated pets can experience heat stress faster than others

Morning and evening walks, shaded routes through the Gorge or Swan Lake, and fresh water throughout the day can help keep pets comfortable heading into summer.

If you have concerns about heat safety or signs of overheating, our team is here to help.

Some pet health issues don’t happen overnight, they often start with small things that get overlooked.

Skipping checkups, delaying vaccines, or waiting until your pet seems unwell can make it harder to catch problems early. Preventive care helps keep your dog or cat healthier, happier, and more comfortable in the long run.

If it’s been a while since your pet’s last visit, now’s a good time to book a wellness check with us.

One of the perks of being located on Burnside Road East: we're a short walk from some of the best pet-friendly spots on this side of Victoria.

After a long walk, pets still need the basics: fresh water, paw checks for burrs and debris, and a quiet rest. If you ever notice something off after a trail day, we're a quick drive back down Burnside.

Bad breath isn't just something to ignore.

By age three, most dogs and cats in our Burnside, Tillicum, and Gorge neighbourhoods show early signs of dental disease. The good news is that it's one of the most responsive areas of pet wellness when caught early. Regular oral exams, at-home brushing, and professional cleanings when needed can support a healthier life for your pet.

Our dental care service includes full oral exams and professional cleanings under anaesthesia with safety monitoring throughout. We walk every family through what we find and what the next step looks like before anything moves forward.

To book a dental exam for your pet, call (778) 775-8387 or visit the Pet Portal at midtownvets.ca.

Springtime in Victoria means cherry blossom season along Government Street, pollen in the air around Beacon Hill Park, and yes, itchy pets.

Seasonal allergies in dogs and cats rarely show up as a runny nose the way they do in humans. Instead, watch for paw licking, ear scratching, red skin around the belly and armpits, and rolling on carpets more than usual. These are some of the early signs families often miss.

If you've noticed any of these changes over the past few weeks, our team at 691 Burnside Rd E can assess what's going on and help put together a care plan that fits your pet and your routine.

Book through the Pet Portal at midtownvets.ca or call (778) 775-8387.

Overgrown nails are one of the most common things we see at Midtown.

When nails grow too long, they press into the ground with every step, changing how your dog walks and putting extra pressure on their wrists, elbows, and shoulders.

Cats with long nails can catch them on carpets, fabric, and furniture. Over time, chronic overgrowth can curl back into the paw pad itself.

Ticks are already showing up on trails across Vancouver Island earlier than many pet owners expect. Even a short walk through grass or along trail edges can be enough for a tick to hitch a ride home.

If you ever find a tick, aren’t sure how to remove one safely, or want to review your pet’s protection plan, we’re happy to help.

Not every visit starts with smiles… but we always aim to end with one.

Pomen, a 6-year-old cat, came in with vomiting and diarrhea.
With the right care and attention, she’s now feeling much better.

Moments like these remind us why we do what we do — because every pet deserves comfort, care, and a chance to feel better.

If your pet isn’t feeling like themselves, don’t wait. We’re here to help.
