We’re wearing orange today in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 🟧

Today, we remember the children who never came home from residential schools, honour the survivors, and reflect on the impact that colonialism continues to have on Indigenous communities to this day.

It's also an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to learning, building relationships, and participating in initiatives that advance meaningful change on a local, provincial, and national level.

One of those initiatives is Reciprocity Trusts. Reciprocity payments are tied to the value of property and business success, creating a growing source of revenue to support Indigenous-led initiatives that matter most to communities.

We encourage those who are able to make a pledge. Just 1%, contributed by many, amounts to real change.

A bit of an update from the Fireweed team! 👋

We are busy behind the scenes getting ready for opening day. Although renovation delays have held us back a little bit, we have not been discouraged and are excited to open our doors in early October!

While our construction team finish painting and cabinetry, we are stocking drawers, placing orders for supplies and making sure we have fun treats and surprises for our pet families. Look out for our upcoming mural being painted by our talented family-care specialist, Natalia. 🎨

Next official announcement will be the opening of our calendar for booking! We can’t wait to welcome you all into our brand new space.

🎉 We're so incredibly excited to have Brenn Clark on board to support clients and staff as part of her Master of Social Work program!

With 13 years of experience in animal care settings, Brenn is passionately committed to advancing animal and human well-being through the approaches of One Health and Veterinary Social Work.

Having studied animal health, One Health, and Social Work, she is now merging these perspectives to better support the emotional and mental health needs of animal caregivers. Her vision is to help create more sustainable, supportive workplaces for professionals and increase access to resources for animal guardians.

When not supporting clients and the clinic team, you can find Brenn supporting animal caregivers through Compassionate Creatures, practicing as a life-long learner, building community, spending time with loved ones (human and non-human), enjoying a silly comedy, and feeling the chill of the ocean air. If you see her in the wild, she always welcomes a chat.

👋 Meet Natalia, our Family Care Specialist!

Natalia’s journey into animal welfare was sparked by a deep fascination with animal behaviour and reactivity.

Over the years she has built a wealth of experience working with reactive dogs and their guardians, understanding firsthand how isolating and overwhelming that experience can be, becoming a trusted resource for families who couldn’t find support through traditional services.

That work has gone hand in hand with her involvement in rescue, both of which are deeply important parts of her life, and are complemented by academic research into barriers to accessing care, all of which shapes the empathy she brings to every pet family she works with.

Outside of the clinic, Natalia is a portrait artist with a soft spot for painting animals, and a firm believer that a good nap with her dog Amigo and her cat Earl, coupled with an episode of Love Island, is a perfectly valid way to spend an afternoon.

📣 Our Family Care role is unique to Fireweed Vet Hospital. It was created to support our pet families from the moment they enter our clinic to when they leave our doors. The Family Care Specialist is your guide to your visit with your pet. They will welcome you into the space, make sure you and your pet are comfortable throughout the appointment, and manage any in-clinic procedures and follow-up care.
