📣 Hey Barrel Racers! 🤩

🤔 Do you want to be part of a study?

👨‍⚕️ Dr. Renaud Léguillette, and the Equine Respiratory Lab at the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) are wrapping up a study on EIPH in barrel horses. If you are heading to the Alberta Barrel Racing Association (ABRA) finals in Ponoka, August 24-30, you and your horse can be a part of it!

🐴 What is the study?

🩺 In 2024, UCVM conducted an initial study that compared the efficacy of injectable lasix versus when it is inhaled via a nebulizer. Results found that when inhaled, the compound reached the lungs in record times of 30 minutes, versus the 2-3 hours it can take when injected. These trials were run in a controlled clinic, and it is time to test the study in the competition setting.

🐎 Interested participants will be eligible to receive two complimentary scopes. One after running with their standard method of treatment, and one after running with nebulizer administered lasix.

🔈 Did you know that sound waves can actually be a part of your horse's healing and performance maintenance? 🔈

I know. Shocking right? ⚡

🤩 Included in our many treatment options is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), which is a non-invasive procedure our veterinarians can perform to support healing and manage pain in soft tissues, joints, and bone conditions. 💪

🐴 Despite its name, shockwave therapy doesn't actually involve electric shock. It uses high-energy acoustic sound waves applied directly to the surface of the skin to impact underlying tissues. These waves act as a mechanical stimuli to help:

💙 Increase blood flow.
💙 Improve delivery of oxygen and nutrients.
💙 Stimulate tissue repair and healing processes.
💙 Reduce pain and nerve sensitivity.

And can be useful in treating:
💙 Suspensory ligament or tendon injuries.
💙 Osteoarthritis.
💙 Some bone and stress injuries, including delayed or non-healing fractures.
💙 Back pain.

👩‍⚕️ Each treatment is catered to an individual horse's needs, as our veterinarians can adjust the energy level, pressure, frequency, duration, and depth of pe*******on. When preparing for a session, our team needs to make sure the shockwave applicator can make good contact with the treatment area. We may need to clean, clip, wet, or gel the surface. Some horses, depending on their sensitivity to the sound or sensation, may need to be sedated for the procedure. Shockwave therapy is not inherently uncomfortable, but is used to stimulate healing processes within the body, and may require 2-3 weeks of recovery time in between sessions.

🐎 Every horse and injury responds differently to shockwave, and it is a procedure that should be performed by a veterinarian, or under veterinary supervision. That way they can determine the most appropriate plan, and frequency based on the horse's specific needs.
