🤔💭How much do YOU know about breeding?

This week we'll be quizzing you! 🌟

What happens after ovulation (besides breeding/insemination)?

We confirm ovulation and often follow up with uterine tone and fluid checks to ensure proper post-breeding care, increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.

What are the benefits of follicle monitoring?

- Reduces the number of breedings per cycle, which helps to reduce post-breeding inflammation

- Saves money on semen handling and shipping.

- Identifies cycle abnormalities (e.g., persistent follicles, silent heat).

- Allows intervention with ovulation-inducing agents when necessary.

How often do mares need to be checked?

For mares being bred with fresh or frozen semen, they may be checked every 6-12 hours during heat to pinpoint ovulation. Mares being bred live cover also benefit from accurate timing, particularly if conception rates have been poor previously.

🤔💭How much do YOU know about breeding?

This week we'll be quizzing you! 🌟

⏰Why does timing matter?

Precise timing of breeding or insemination is critical. Ovulation usually occurs within 24–48 hours once a dominant follicle reaches peak size and the uterus shows classic edema patterns. Accurate timing increases success rates and avoids unnecessary costs.

What are we looking for during ultrasound?

Using re**al ultrasound, we assess the number and size of follicles on each o***y, as well as the tone and edema of the uterus. A dominant follicle nearing ovulation typically measures 35–50 mm in diameter.

What is a follicle?

A fluid-filled structure on the o***y that contains a developing egg. During a mare’s estrous cycle, one follicle typically grows larger than the others and eventually ovulates—releasing the egg for potential fertilization.

A question we have been asked a lot lately: Can I trailer in for a dental?
A: Yes! We love seeing horses in-clinic—it’s temperature controlled, well-lit, and gives us better access to our tools. Once the procedure is over, your horse can recover from sedation and you can grab a cup of tea or coffee!
Bonus: You don’t have to clean your barn 😉

✅ Mobile or in-clinic = your choice (on farm appointments only available within our regular travel radius, of course).

Please join us in wishing Andy, our Official Problem Solver, a very happy birthday! 🎉 At Rhythm Equine, Andy wears many hats—he’s the keeper of the books and the WiFi, veterinary vehicle whisperer, hay distribution officer, seasonal roadway engineer, fixer of all things, and the paycheque fairy, just to name a few. We truly couldn’t do this without him! Wishing him a fantastic day!

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve moved to a new clinic location! 🎉
While we’re excited about this next chapter, we want to let you know that some of you may notice changes in mileage charges on your invoices. For some, this may be a bit more, and for others, it could be less.

We’re committed to keeping your veterinary care affordable. To help with this, here are a few ideas to save on mileage costs:

🚗 Haul your horse into the clinic for your appointment to avoid mileage charges.

📅 Book your appointment when we’re in your area for a more affordable rate.

🐴 Book multiple horses at the same barn to consolidate and save on mileage fees.

As always, we truly appreciate your trust in us for your veterinary needs. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to discuss how we can best accommodate you!

Thank you for your continued support, and we can’t wait to see you at our new clinic! 💙

We are thrilled to introduce Dr. Lisa Hill, who joined the Rhythm Equine team as an associate veterinarian in February 2025! Dr. Hill’s love for horses began at a young age in Victoria, BC, and has guided her through an impressive journey in veterinary care.

She earned her B.Sc. from the University of Victoria before traveling to New Zealand for veterinary school at Massey University, graduating in 2018. Dr. Hill then further honed her skills with a one-year internship at the Bendigo Equine Hospital in Australia, focusing on sports medicine, surgery, internal medicine, and reproduction.

After returning to Canada, Dr. Hill worked at Energy Equine in the Calgary area, and we are so excited to welcome her expertise to our team! Her special interests include lameness, sports medicine, dentistry, and surgery. Outside of work, Dr. Hill loves staying active outdoors through hiking, horseback riding, and playing softball.

We feel incredibly lucky to have Dr. Hill as part of the Rhythm Equine family and look forward to the exceptional care she will bring to our patients and clients.
Please join us in welcoming her to the team! 🐴💙

🛻🐴 Guidelines for Transporting Horses in Cold Temperatures

Safe Cold Weather Range 🌡
• Hauling horses in temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F) is often acceptable if proper precautions are taken

Precautions for Cold Weather Transport:🛻
• Use blankets for horses that are not acclimatized or have a shorter coat
• Ideally, use a trailer that is insulated to reduce heat loss
• Provide bedding to insulate against cold trailer flooring
• Maintain proper ventilation to avoid respiratory issues while minimizing drafts

Extreme Cold Weather:🥶
• Avoid transporting horses in temperatures below -25°C (-13°F) unless absolutely necessary
• If transport is required:
- Use a heated trailer or implement significant protective measures
- Monitor horses closely during the journey for signs of cold stress

General Recommendations:🐴
• Assess the health and condition of the horses before transport—older, young, or compromised horses are more susceptible to cold stress
• Plan trips to minimize travel time and exposure to extreme conditions
• Check horses regularly during transit to ensure their well-being

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure the safety and comfort of horses during winter transportation.🐴
