☀️ Summer days are coming to an end and back to school is right around the corner 📚! We hope everyone enjoys a safe and relaxing long weekend, whether it’s having some fun at the lake, the beach 🏖️ or just enjoying some sun at home! Remember to keep yourselves and your pets hydrated 💦 as temperatures continue to soar, and take lots of breaks in the shade to cool off! 😎

Today on Dr Higgins, with the assistance of Dr. Whitney, performed an emergency enucleation surgery (removal of the eye) with our VETSCALPEL CO2 surgical laser to help poor Pippa get back to feeling herself again! 🐶

Pippa sustained an injury to her eye, resulting in a corneal ulcer that unfortunately wasn’t improving with initial treatment. She was seen by a veterinary ophthalmologist when things progressed and had unfortunately developed a melting ulcer and ruptured/perforated cornea but unfortunately they were not able to perform surgery right away. And that’s where we came in! A concerned call from Pippa’s mom came in asking if we could perform the surgery and this morning Pippa had surgery to remove her damaged eye and remove a big source of pain.

Using our CO2 surgical laser meant that surgery was performed and completed with very minimal bleeding, reduced post op pain and inflammation, and faster tissue healing. One of the reasons we LOVE our laser 💥.

As you can see Pippa was already feeling much better and trotting happily along just 30 minutes after recovery 🩷

Our hearts are full!! Gracie was rescued from a severe hoarding situation alongside our very own Josie…To learn that Gracie has also now found her forever home and with a loving furriend, just makes us soo happy!! 🩶🩷 yay Gracie!!!

It’s International Cat Day today!! 🤎
And while a 17yr old Queen 👑 like me deserves to be celebrated EVERYDAY, my humans also wanted to make sure to give a shout out to all of our kitty friends, patients, and the furry lap warmers they cuddle up to at home after a hard days work.

Here’s to all the kitties in the world today!! May you always be mischievous and keep your humans on their toes like me!! 😼

ATTENTION Pet owners and the Community of Saskatoon! We have received notification that a rabid bat was confirmed in the LAKERIDGE neighbourhood of Saskatoon.

🦇🤎We want to stress the importance that bats are friends! They are amazing creatures that play a very vital role in our ecosystems. This is a PSA meant to provide helpful information to pet owners on updating their pets’ rabies vaccinations if needed, as well as provide the public with helpful information for general safety and the proper authority contacts should they encounter any rabies suspicious case! Please do not approach, harm or injure bats or any wildlife you encounter! Rabies is considered endemic in Canadian wildlife and every year we are notified of rabies positive cases in wildlife in the Saskatoon or surrounding areas, so this is not an uncommon occurrence or meant to be taken as a scary post. Thankfully through vaccinations of pets and the diligence of the public, animal to human infection cases continue to be very rare!

💉We encourage all pet owners to check the status of their pets’ rabies vaccination, and update if needed. Our clinic (as well as most) can also perform Titre testing to assess your pets rabies antibody levels, and whether a booster should be considered.

WELCOME Dr. Jiricka!!

Summer sure has been busy here at the clinic and we are super excited to show you what we’ve been up to lately! We are so thrilled to introduce to you one of our newest team members at Acadia, Dr. Whitney Jiricka DVM 💜👩🏻‍⚕️

A local Saskatchewan’er, Dr. Jiricka was raised on a farm near Rosetown and was surrounded by a wide range of animals—including chickens, cattle, horses, rabbits, cats, and dogs from a young age. Her early exposure to animal care sparked her deep passion for veterinary medicine and gave her a strong appreciation for the diversity the profession offers. She recently graduated from the WCVM, joining our team last month; and has been settling into her new career while excitedly starting to get to know all of our amazing clients and patients.

Dr. Jiricka has a keen interest in soft tissue surgery and medical imaging and is eager to learn about how Acadia’s advanced technology surgery techniques (using CO2 surgical laser over traditional scalpel methods), help our patients recover faster and experience less pain and inflammation. She is excited to soon offer laser surgery as part of her care to our patients.

Remember loud celebrations and fireworks 🎆 can cause distress in some of our pets. Calming supplements, compression shirts, and keeping them indoors or in a quiet area can help reduce fear and anxiety and also help keep them safe!

Please note that we are closed tomorrow on Canada Day with regular hours resuming on July 2nd. We will be open today until 5:30pm for any last min food or medication pick ups!
