🍀🐶 Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Ireland’s Native Breeds! 🐱☘️

This St. Patrick’s Day, we’re celebrating the luck of the Irish by shining a spotlight on some amazing native Irish dog and cat breeds! 🐾

🌈 Irish Dog Breeds:
🐺 Irish Wolfhound – One of the tallest dog breeds, these gentle giants are as noble as they are loving.
🐕 Irish Setter – Known for their stunning red coats and playful energy, they’re the life of the party!
🐩 Kerry Blue Terrier – A loyal and intelligent breed with a signature curly blue-gray coat.
🦊 Irish Terrier – Full of s***k and courage, they’re one of the oldest terrier breeds.
💦 Irish Water Spaniel – The ultimate water-loving dog with curly fur and a fun-loving personality.
🌾 Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier – Friendly, affectionate, and known for their silky, soft coats that make them stand out!

🐱 An Irish Sea Connection – The Manx Cat!
While Ireland doesn’t have an officially recognized native cat breed, the Manx cat, originating from the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, has deep roots in the region. These tail-less or short-tailed cats are known for their playful, affectionate nature and strong hunting instincts. They’ve been part of Celtic folklore for centuries, making them a true lucky charm! ☘️🐈

🐱 Did you know? Over 70% of cats over 3 years old suffer from dental disease!

At Tudor Glen Veterinary Hospital, we're dedicated to your pet’s overall health, and that includes maintaining a healthy mouth. Dental disease in cats can lead to pain, difficulty eating, and other serious health issues if left untreated.

One effective way to combat this is by using a specialized t/d (therapeutic dental) diet. This diet is designed to help reduce tartar buildup and promote oral health, making it easier to maintain your cat’s dental hygiene between professional cleanings. Regular dental check-ups combined with the right diet can make a huge difference in your cat’s quality of life.

If you have concerns about your cat's dental health, want to learn more about our dental care services or to book a complementary dental consultation, give us a call at (780) 458-6051 or email us at [email protected].

Let’s work together to keep those kitty smiles bright and healthy!

❄️ Cold Weather Pet Safety Tips! ❄️

As temperatures drop, it’s important to keep our furry friends safe from the cold! Here are a few tips to help protect your pets this winter:

🐾 Limit Outdoor Time – Even pets with thick fur can get frostbite or hypothermia. Keep outdoor time short, especially in extreme cold.

🐾 Watch for Signs of Cold Stress – Shivering, whining, or lifting paws off the ground are signs your pet is too cold.

🐾 Wipe Their Paws – Salt, ice, and antifreeze can be harmful if licked off. Clean your pet’s paws after walks to prevent irritation or ingestion of toxic substances.

🐾 Provide Cozy Shelter – If your pet spends time outside, make sure they have a warm, dry, and insulated shelter.

🐾 Bundle Up! – Short-haired and small breeds benefit from a cozy sweater or jacket when going outside.

🐾 Check Car Engines – Outdoor cats often seek warmth under car hoods. Tap on the hood before starting your vehicle to avoid accidents.

Stay warm and keep your pets safe this winter! If you have any concerns about cold weather and your pet’s health, give us a call at (780) 458-6051 or email [email protected]. 🐶🐱💙

Brushing Your Pet's Teeth Can Build Your Relationship With Your Pet 🦷 ♥️

The best way to prevent dental disease and bad breath is to brush your pet's teeth daily. The act of regular brushing reduces bacteria and stimulates the blood supply in the gum tissue to fight bacteria under the gum line. The process of toothbrushing requires, time, patience and many, many treats but the rewards increase your pet's oral health and increases the human animal bond.

When teaching your pet to allow daily toothbrushing follow these steps. Remember that each pet will progress at their own pace so go slow and allow them to really understand what you are expecting at each step.

🐾Step 1: For the first week, choose a flavored, pet friendly toothpaste. Offer your pet a small amount of toothpaste on your finger and let them lick it off.
🐾Step 2: Once they have come expect the little toothpaste treat, apply a small amount of the toothpaste to a tooth with your finger. Slowly over the next week, increase to 2 teeth, and then 3 teeth as your pet allows.
🐾Step 3: Still using your finger, spread the toothpaste over all of your pets teeth and gums.
🐾Step 4: Once your pet tolerates putting toothpaste on all of their teeth, switch to a small pet toothbrush to apply the toothpaste.

Daily brushing, dental diets, water additives, oral wipes and chews can all help to decrease the number of bacteria on and around your pet's teeth. When using dental products, always use VOHC or Veterinary Oral Health Council approved products for dogs and cats. Products with a VOHC (https://vohc.org/)seal are proven to slow plaque and tartar accumulation. Remember that because a food or product says that it fights dental disease, does not mean that it has been proven to do so.

It is Dental Health Month! Reach out and we can help you with any of your pet dental care questions.
