šŸ’™ To Our Community ā€” Weā€™re Here for You šŸ’™

Our hearts are with every family affected by the wildfires. We know how overwhelming this time can be, and how deeply pets are part of that family.

If your pet has been injured or displaced due to the fires or evacuation, please know: youā€™re not alone.

Weā€™re offering exams and basic first aid care for wildfire-related injuries, and weā€™re doing everything we can to make additional medical support and pet food accessible. For families who need a safe place for their pets while they figure out next steps, weā€™re also offering temporary 24-hour boarding for up to 10 stable patients (depending on size and type of pet).

Important Update: Temporary Emergency Hours

We have made the decision to temporarily adjust our emergency hospitalā€™s operating hours a couple of days per week to ensure we can continue delivering high-quality care when patients need it most. This adjustment is a proactive measure that prioritizes safe, sustainable care for our teams and the community.

We are actively hiring and invite veterinarians who are passionate about emergency medicine to connect with us. Thereā€™s a meaningful opportunity to make a real impact in a high-demand settingā€”and weā€™re excited to welcome new talent into our dedicated team.

We are working hard to rebuild our team and restore 24/7 emergency care as soon as possible. If your pet requires urgent care while our hospital is closed, we recommend contacting one of the following 24-hour emergency veterinary hospitals:

UPDATE:

Mahalo Veterinary Hospital (on Turner Road in Nanaimo) is offering urgent care services during the hours that Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital is temporarily closed. Mahalo will be open overnight on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If your pet is in need of veterinary care overnight on those days, please reach out to Mahalo. We, Applecross, will continue to offer urgent care during our operating hours.

We have an important message regarding Emergency Vet Services in Nanaimo. Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital on Metral Drive will be reducing their hours until further notice. They are the only 24/7 emergency veterinary hospital north of Langford. This is a temporary reduction in hours as they increase their staffing levels in order to return to 24/7 in the future. Please see below for further information.

We've treated many patients for tick removals this winter and have received even more calls about them! Ticks are present year-round on Vancouver Island but are typically more active during the spring and early summer. However, with this winter being so mild, we've seen more tick cases than usual.

Ticks can transmit diseases to both people and petsā€”and they're pretty unpleasant to deal with. To keep these pests at bay, make sure your pet is on a broad-spectrum tick prevention treatment.
