Did you know we offer endoscopy procedures right here at Bluenose Animal Hospital?

Our in-house equipment allows us to perform procedures such as video otoscopy, rhinoscopy, upper airway endoscopy, and gastroscopy (on select small patients). This gives us the ability to investigate conditions that we can’t always diagnose with a physical exam or x-rays alone.

A recent patient presented to us with persistent one-sided nasal discharge that hadn’t responded to multiple courses of antibiotics. To get to the root of the problem, we performed a rhinoscopy, allowing us to examine the nasal passages under direct visualization.

During the procedure, we observed white fungal plaques and a fungal “ball”, pictured below. Samples were collected through the scope which confirmed a fungal nasal infection, most consistent with aspergillosis.

Although this isn’t a condition we diagnose frequently in Nova Scotia, it is caused by fungal spores that are naturally present in the environment. When inhaled, these spores can settle within the nasal passages and, under the right conditions, grow into fungal plaques or a fungal “ball” and lead to persistent irritation of the nasal passage. This condition is not contagious between dogs.

Having tools like rhinoscopy available in our clinic allows us to identify conditions that might otherwise go undiagnosed, helping us provide more accurate diagnoses and targeted treatment for our patients 🐾

Holiday Hours Reminder 🇨🇦

Just a friendly reminder that we will be closed on Wednesday July 1st for Canada Day.

Please note that we will also be closing early at 12:00 PM tomorrow, Tuesday June 30, for our inventory count. **This will not affect scheduled acupuncture/chiropractic appointments with Dr. Hansen - these will continue as scheduled**

We will reopen with our regular business hours on Thursday July 2nd.
