In 2012, after many years of veterinary practice ownership, long time Kamloops residents Dr. Ken Gummeson and Dr. Diane McKelvey, sold their interests in an existing Kamloops practice and embarked on series of new veterinary adventures. Dr. McKelvey took a two year field trip to Australia, where she taught small animal internal medicine to veterinary students at the University of Adelaide, and Dr.
Gummeson spent a year doing locum work at various clinics around B.C. and worked for a time as an interim Registrar for the CVBC (the agency that regulates and governs the veterinary profession in B.C.) McKelvey and Gummeson pooled their resources and love of veterinary medicine to create the modern, purpose built veterinary hospital that they both had envisioned as being the perfect place to put their skills, knowledge and expertise to the best use. Aberdeen Veterinary Hospital was opened in Kamloops, BC on January 2nd, 2015. In 2019, Dr. Gummeson purchased Dr. McKelvey's shares in the hospital, making him the sole owner. Dr. McKelvey remained on as an associate and Aberdeen Veterinary Hospital has grown beyond what either of them could have imagined. The practice now employs eight full and part time veterinarians and 18 support staff. Aberdeen Veterinary Hospital has been voted the best veterinary practice in Kamloops in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
