Well deserved!
Congratulations

ABVMA Practice of the Year Award. Honouring a veterinary practice that exemplifies excellence in care, innovation and community leadership.

Congratulations to Jasper Veterinary Clinic, a practice that has shown exceptional resilience and commitment to its community.

Founded in 1988 by Dr. Beth Regehr and later owned for nearly 30 years by Dr. Janet Jones, the clinic served Jasper and Valemount until the 2024 wildfire destroyed the Jasper location. After the Valemount Clinic closed that fall, the team continued providing care using salvaged equipment and temporary trailers.

In May 2025, Dr. Sara Regehr returned to rebuild the clinic her mother founded. Today, an atco-style trailer serves as their temporary home, offering expanded services while a new clinic is underway.

What is a “bit seat” and why can it be harmful to your horse’s mouth?

A bit seat refers to the shortening and rounding of the first molar. Owners are often misled to believe that creating bit seats will lead to improved acceptance of the bit, but unfortunately it often creates the opposite. A horse who has bit seats typically will have a pain response if/when the bit comes in contact with these teeth because the vital outer layer of the teeth (dentin) has been compromised, risking damage to the interior of the tooth.

When the dentin is gone, the sensitive structures inside the tooth are exposed. In addition to hypersensitivity and pain, the damage can be severe enough to create infection and lead to a rotten tooth that will eventually need to be extracted.

If your equine dental provider mentions a bit seat to you, you may consider a second opinion! For the wellbeing and safety of your horses and yourself.

The horse pictured below is a young mare who was extremely sensitive on her upper premolars (106 and 206), even under sedation. We hope that with some time to allow these teeth to erupt a bit more over the next few 6-12 months that she will start feeling more comfortable, especially in the bridle.

Statement from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and Office of State Veterinarian:

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture / Office of State Veterinarian has received notification regarding the confirmation of several cases of equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM), the neurologic disease linked to equine herpes virus (EHV-1) in both Texas and Oklahoma following the WPRA World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event in Waco, Texas, on Nov. 5-9, 2025. Currently there are no known EHV-1/EHM detections in the Commonwealth associated with these events.

The extent of this EHV-1 outbreak is not fully known. Presentation of EHV-1 in these horses has been acute with rapid progression and high clinical severity. Measures to prevent further horses from direct or indirect EHV-1 virus contact are recommended. These measures, including increased biosecurity overall, are encouraged.

"Equine owners are encouraged to stay vigilant and monitor exposed or suspect infected animals closely,” Agriculture Commissioner Jonathon Shell said. “Based on current evaluations and the evolving situation, we highly recommend equine owners take this virus seriously and weigh potential risks when commingling equine.”

If you suspect that your horse has come in contact with the virus, call your veterinarian. For more information, visit aaep.org/resource/aaep-infectious-disease-guidelines-equine-herpesvirus-1-4/.

Hagyard’s Dr. Nathan Slovis was fortunate enough to discuss how the horse community can be exposed to and potentially contaminate clothing with infectious pathogens with Dr. Charles P. Gerba from the University of Arizona. Dr. Gerba has published over 500 manuscripts, many of which focus on whether enteric viruses, fungi, and bacteria such as Salmonella, rotavirus, and hepatitis A virus (HAV) survive the wash cycle, rinse cycle, and drying cycle commonly practiced in households in the United States.

Dr. Gerba and his colleagues have found that washing with detergent alone is not effective in removing or inactivating enteric viruses or bacteria from excessively soiled clothing. The most important factors for reducing the presence of viruses, bacteria, and fungi in laundry include washing on the hot cycle, using advanced detergents that contain enzymes and surfactants, and incorporating sanitizing agents. Following these protocols have been shown to reduce the pathogen load in laundry after washing and drying by at least 99.99%. Remember to utilize hot water, as that is necessary to help kill these infectious agents.

If you need to disinfect your laundry machine, Dr. Gerba recommends placing 500ml of household bleach into the washing machine, allow it to run a “full cycle” with NO laundry in HOT water and repeat. To decontaminate the dryer, it should be cycled for 2 hours at a minimum temperature of 131 degrees Fahrenheit, or you can manually clean the dryer with a strong disinfectant like accelerated hydrogen peroxide.
