The GCUOF is a 2.5 acre certified organic farm and learning centre on the University of Guelph campus. The farm offers opportunities for hands-on learning about ecological food production.

A few of our the crops that are being harvested at the farm these days.

A couple of weeks ago we harvested our garlic scapes. The scape is the flower stock of the garlic plant. We pick it because it is delicious and is necessary to ensure large garlic bulbs.

It has the consistency of a green bean but tastes like garlic. By removing the scape the plant diverts it’s energy into making big roots rather than spending energy trying to make a flower and “seeds”.

We wait until the plant is about 60% yellow before we harvest. Usually the last week of July.

We have been pushing to get lots of our seedlings planted the last few weeks, while making time for harvesting some spring crops too.

A big thank you to our summer students! Their hard work made really made the farm successful this season. Some will still be around the farm this fall but not like they have been for the past 4 months.

The next time you come to the farm and see the beauty or eat some of our produce know that these are the faces of the farmers that made it all possible.

This year we are trying a new variety of red Napa cabbage called Merlot from .

We found had a bit of cabbage looper damage in the field, but slightly less with this variety. It has good flavour and stunning colour.

We will try growing this one again!

Weekly w**ding.
Every week you need to make time to keep your crops w**d free. Disturbing the top cm or two will keep the newly germinated w**ds in check. If you dig too deep you risk bringing up more w**d seeds from deeper down to germinate sooner than later.

Oh the road this morning picking up supplies from and IrrigationPlus.

Seeing this old seed packing machine here reminds me of a conversation I had this past week with some other small seed growers in Ontario with one of the virtual meetups.

Several of them expressed interest in needing help to design a simple inexpensive machine that could pack seed packages. If there are any folks that have those skills message us and we would be happy to put you folks in touch.
