Some excitement today at the Poodle Farm! 🐾✨

Look at those smiles (and those ribbons)! Today Cowboy stepped into the ring for his very first Rally Obedience trial and absolutely crushed it. He placed in all three of his runs and officially earned his CRN title! This excitable boy showed me just how well he can focus, and his joy in the ring was the ultimate reward for all our training.

Crumpet and I also had an absolute blast with our Excellent runs, bringing home another qualifying score toward our CRX title!

Rally Obedience and positive reinforcement training are all about building a resilient, happy partnership where our dogs genuinely want to participate with us. Today was such a fun example of that.

Thank you to the Poodle Farm and all the judges/organizers for a fantastic trial! Now, time for some well-deserved extra treats for my champions. 🍖🎉

Muzzles are one of the most misunderstood tools in the dog world. As a result, so many dogs and their guardians miss out on the benefits of the muzzle.

Muzzles still carry stigma. Most people see a muzzled dog and immediately think of aggression. But there are so many other circumstances a well-conditioned muzzle can be incredibly useful.

Some dogs need support safely navigating veterinary care. Some dogs get overly mouthy when they're excited in play. Some dogs eat things that they shouldn't. Some dogs think it's really fun to nip at children's ankles. And some dogs might feel threatened in certain situations, and escalate to using their mouths to request space.

There are countless reasons why muzzle training can benefit a dog. Even if your dog doesn't fit into the scenarios described above, one day they might! Handling procedures and medical care might be a breeze for your dog, but if they're injured or in pain, they may be less tolerant.

Just like harnesses, crates, or nail trims, muzzle training works best when introduced thoughtfully, positively, and long before it’s urgently needed. Keep your eyes peeled for more muzzle content over the next couple of weeks! We’ll be sharing more about muzzle myths, training tips, and why we believe muzzle destigmatization matters for all dogs. 🧡

Congratulations to Blue, Finnley, Cas, and Teddy for graduating from our Life Skills program! These dogs have leveled up from “I have interesting ideas” to “I can make thoughtful choices... most of the time.” 🧠

In six quick weeks, these pups and their people practiced all sorts of real-life skills — polite walking, recall, settling, focus, and building neutrality about exciting, weird things in the world.

We’re so proud of these teams and all the work they’ve put in along the way. Keep up the great work! 🧡

Dogs experience outdoor spaces very differently than we do. We mostly focus on how a garden looks. Dogs are busy noticing scent, texture, movement, sound, and tiny environmental changes we barely register.

These suggestions can help make hanging in the yard a more enriching experience for your dog. Think of all five senses when you're planning your garden this year. There are so many little tweaks you can make to give you dog a soothing sensory experience!

What do you put in the yard or the garden for your dog? 🌱🐕

Dogs absolutely form strong social preferences and relationships with other dogs. They can even bond with another dog in a way we might lovingly label “best friends.” 🧡

Just like humans, dogs often have individuals they feel especially comfortable with: dogs who have a similar play style, who communicate easily, or who share the same interests or hobbies (like sniffing in the forest together, or collaborating on a fun game of Capture the Squirrel).

How can you tell if your dog has a bestie? You might see them choose to rest closely to each other, move together, seek each other out when stressed, mirror play styles, or prefer one another's company even in larger group settings.

Not every dog wants close canine friendships, and that’s okay too. But for social dogs, those preferred companions can be really special relationships - your dog's own version of a "best friend". 🐾

Play is one of our favourite ways to practice real-life skills.

It gives dogs the opportunity to think, respond, and regulate while excited, which is often much harder (and much more relevant) than practicing in calm, quiet settings. It also helps humans learn how to recognize rising arousal and support dogs through slowing down before things escalate.

Fun and learning can absolutely happen at the same time. It's our favourite way to teach! Learn more at onelegcanineco.com. 🧡

While training is often viewed as telling a dog what to do, cooperative care is an example of valuing our dog's voice. By teaching these skills, we’re essentially giving our dogs a seat at the table during their own medical care.

Here’s what that can look like in practice:

Milo is helping me prep Cowboy for future blood draws. We’re using a "flop" position as Cowboy's start button:

Head down: "I’m ready, keep going." ✅

Head lifts: "Stop. I’m not so sure." 🛑✋

For today’s practice, we’ve introduced two new variables: a second person and the distinct scent of rubbing alcohol. By giving Cowboy the agency to communicate when he is ready to proceed, we’re ensuring his trust stays solid—even when the environment starts to smell more like a clinic and less like a practice session.

Teaching consent isn’t just for "difficult" dogs; it’s for every dog who deserves to feel safe. And honestly? It’s a lot less stressful for the humans, too.

No wrestling required.

Healthy socialization isn't just about high-energy interaction—it's also about the ability to exist calmly in a world full of distractions. 🐾

All of our daycare school students get practice recognizing when they need rest, and support to CHOOSE a nap (yes, even Ernie!)

Training doesn't only happen in designated sessions. Our dogs are learning all the time. Every day moments like opening the front door, coming out of the car, or entering a new space are all opportunities to practice impulse control.

This is just one example of seizing daily moments as training opportunities. While allocated training time is important, this type of training helps your dog make good, real life choices. We're big fans of making training practical for humans and dogs. Try this tip and let us know how it impacts your dog's impulse control!
