On the island of Kauai, tourists can take part in a heartwarming program called “Shelter Dogs on Field Trips,” where visitors check a dog out of the local humane society for a day-long adventure. Run by the Kauai Humane Society, the initiative matches shelter pups with tourists who want to hike, hit the beach, or simply explore the island with a four-legged companion.

It’s more than just a cute vacation activity—it gives the dogs valuable time outside the shelter, boosts their social skills, and often helps them get adopted. For travelers, it’s a chance to give back in a meaningful way while soaking in the natural beauty of Kauai.

The Fosterville Gold Mine is already the largest in Victoria, and the Government has just given the tick to expand it.

Independent hydrologists say the mine is polluting the Campaspe River with arsenic and antimony, which is killing native fish and wildlife.

Arsenic has also been found in people’s drinking water.

A member of the community even found thick, arsenic sludge at the bottom of their drinking water tank.

But it gets worse…

The mines blasting is causing earthquakes – and putting homes and lives at risk.

A 3.6 magnitude earthquake has already been triggered by the mine, damaging homes in nearby towns.

And the mine itself admits that the expansion will likely cause more and worse seismic activity.

Unfortunately, there’s more…

The expansion will also destroy parts of vital conservation zones - home to unique Australian wildlife and already under pressure from habitat loss.

Birds and reptiles already listed as vulnerable or critically endangered are directly in the firing line. This includes the Swift Parrot, Pink-tailed Worm Lizard, Flame Robin, and Diamond Firetail.

The mine uses the cheapest, riskiest dam method to store toxic waste – and they’ve admitted these dams could fail.

No warning system.

No emergency plan for people living downstream.

The mine hasn’t faced proper environmental scrutiny since the last Environmental Effects Statement in 1996.

Instead, it used a legal loophole to execute 50+ work plan variations which the public can not object to.

This has seen the mine grow from 54 hectares to 2,847.

In May, the Government had the opportunity to advocate for the mine's local community and habitat.

But they didn’t.

26 years later, the government are the ones ignoring the concerns of the people of Axedale and Goornong.

In the last parliamentary sitting week, I questioned the Minister for Planning about this reckless decision.

As is often the case, finding answers isn't easy - but I’m not dropping it.

This is not just environmental destruction.

It’s policy failure - and the community deserves answers.
