Water shortage? Or decades of mismanagement?
Metro Vancouver says we’re heading into summer with snowpack at roughly 60% of normal feeding our reservoirs.
But here’s what’s getting ignored:
The Fraser River is moving massive volumes of fresh water to the ocean every second untouched.
So let’s call it what it is:
This isn’t a lack of water.
It’s a lack of planning.
Because of years decades of mismanagement,
homeowners, farmers, landscapers, nurseries, and small businesses are the ones paying for it.
Restrictions hit:
* Your lawn
* Your business
* Your ability to grow and operate
While real solutions?
They’ve been pushed off for years.
Ideas like capturing, storing, and treating river water
should’ve been explored years and years ago not when we’re already behind.
And here’s what gets overlooked…
A healthy lawn isn’t just “watering grass.”
It’s:
* Cooling your property naturally (reducing heat around your home)
* Cleaning the air and trapping dust
* Supporting mental health green spaces reduce stress and improve well-being
* Creating usable space for families, kids, and everyday life
* Helping manage water naturally through absorption and soil health
This isn’t a luxury it’s part of a healthy, livable environment.
We can build massive infrastructure when it’s a priority.
We can move fast when it matters.
So why are we still acting like this is out of our control?
Stop calling it a shortage.
Start calling it what it is:
A system that hasn’t kept up and people are paying the price.
