Adopt a Less-Adoptable Cat Week
Baker (M) – My name is Baker. I was a stray and when I arrived at the Safe Haven, I wasn’t in very good shape, but just look at me now!
I am the epitome of good health.
Yes, I am missing my left eye. It was dead and I had to be enucleated. Sounds like
something to do with atomic energy, but no, it means my eye was removed.
So now, as all card players know, I am a one-eyed jack.
Does that slow me down?
Not in the least.
I am 9 months old and I have lots of energy. I love to play with toys and can
entertain myself for hours. Even though I am a very busy fellow, I get along well with other cats and if there is some hissing, it’s the other cats telling me to give them space.
Unless, my missing eye gives you the wi***es, there is nothing about me that makes me less-adoptable.

Adopt a Less-Adoptable Cat Week
Tony and Giovanni (Gio to his friends!) (both M) – We are the last two of the Little Mobsters litter. (We’re mobsters in tuxedos!) But don’t worry, we have no links to the Mafia or the Camorra. And although we make laundry for the humans, we have never laundered anything else. We are brothers and are bonded as only brothers can be. So…we need to be adopted together.

We are just over 2 years old. We are gentle and friendly; we have that healthy glow that only a Mediterranean diet provides (!); we are good with other cats; we love to play laser tag.

Tony here. I am a little shy with people at first, but it doesn’t take me long to warm up to a friendly visitor. Once I identify a person as a friend, I really like to get pets and scritches. I also like to play, especially when a friend is willing to throw little toys for my brother and I. Gio and I have been hereat the shelter for a really long time, almost our whole lives, so we don’t get friendly visitors as often as we would like.

Gio here and one of my favourite things is rolling in a patch of warm sunlight. Another favourite thing is cuddling on a friend’s lap - I am a true lap-cat through and through. My favourite toy is a spring, because they sproing and they are so fun to chase when someone throws them for us. Being brushed is also very nice! I agree with Tony, that we don’t get enough hooman-time, and it makes us both a little sad. However, we both really enjoy spying on the cats in the units on either side of ours, and that helps to pass the time.

So…why, if we’re so darned cute and friendly, haven’t we been adopted? Well…one of us has a minor problem called “inappropriate peeing.” Furniture, towels, that sort of thing, you know. Not conducive to making people want to take us home. We have improved greatly, but we still have the odd miscue.
Do you know what would be best for us? Being the only cats in a house, with patient hoomans who will take the time to help us say good-bye to this unfortunate habit for good. Having access to our own safely-enclosed outdoor catio would also be helpful.

Our hooman friends will provide some information about this problem, and how it can be resolved, below.

Hooman here! We love these boys so much and would love to see them find a family of their own! More information on inappropriate elimination in general and in Tony and Gio's particular case!
Most likely triggers for Tony / Gio are:
Litter box location preference,
Litter box aversion (not liking the type of box or the type of litter)
Anxiety (boredom, being introduced to an unknown cat, or in response to a significant environmental change)
The good news is that inappropriate peeing can usually be corrected, although it will require a patient and motivated pet-parent who is willing to spend a little time and effort in order to reap the reward of being adored by two very sweet and loving cats.

Adopt a Less-Adoptable Cat Week
Gomae (M) – Mid-September, 2023, 1:30 in the afternoon, I arrived at the Safe Haven along with 5 other cats that I had been living with.
Our guardian could no longer look after us and we were dropped off in a rush by a neighbour and family members.
Four of my mates eventually found homes; sadly, another passed away… and I remain.
I am a very shy, very quiet 8 year old. I am also very handsome and the care I have received at the Haven has kept me that way. I am in good health. I keep to myself; I accept other cats, but do not interact with them; I accept human interaction, but I do not seek it out.
In short, my life is sleep, eat and use the litter box.
Would that change if I had a home of my own and a special person to interact with? I’d love to know.

Meet Sugar-Jenn For Pets Sake!! This beautiful lady house panther is a real sweetheart. She was a stray who came to the Haven in early August. She is about 2 1/2 years old. She is confident and easy-going, has lots of energy, likes people interactions and is good with other cats. Sugar-Jenn would love to have a buddy to play with. If you would like to meet her, please submit an application through the Safe Haven's website. After it has been reviewed, you will be contacted via email to set up a meet and greet appointment.

Adopt a Less-Adoptable Cat Week
Roxy (F) – My name is Roxy. I am an older lady, approximately 11 ½ years old. I was part of a 6-pack of cats, but the other cats made me nervous, so I mostly lived upstairs in my house while the other cats lived downstairs. I want to be the only cat in the house. I like people. I am in good health. Sit quietly and I will come over for a visit. I give great head butts and I have a nice, quiet purr that I turn on when I am enjoying your company. I like to have my chin scratched. But…you need to be alert: although I am revelling in your attention, I can suddenly decide that enough is enough.
Does this make me less-adoptable? No, not all. It simply means that my new human companion has to be cat-savvy, appreciate my quirks and love me just the same.

Mavis and Martha (both F) – We were part of a large colony that had gotten out of control. Over 20 of us – cats and kittens – were trapped and brought to the Safe Haven earlier this year.
We tested positive for a nasty illness called panleukopenia, which can often be fatal. But with the loving care of Safe Haven staff and our own resiliency, we survived and here we are in good health.

Mavis here…I am a medium-haired grey lady. I am about 2 years old. I am shy and guarded by nature, probably because I had to live outside and survive on my wits. But I will be affectionate with the right person. She (or he) just has to approach me on my
terms. Do that, I will even turn into a lap cat!
My turn now, says Martha. Look at me! I am a gorgeous medium-haired tortoiseshell cat. I’m not a feline you see every day! I am about 1 ½ years old, I think. I look at the world in much the same way as my friend Mavis, which is not surprising. And like Mavis, I, too, will shy away at first approach, but if you give me time, let me climb up onto a high shelf where I feel most secure,
I will relax and show you my true colours (thanks, Cyndi L.!) and they are as beautiful as the palette of my fur coat.

Adopt a Less-Adoptable Cat Week
What makes for a “Less-Adoptable” cat, you ask?
Good question!
It is often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
We cats like to think that “less-adoptable” is also in the eye of the beholder.
Whereas one person may view us as less than desirable company, another may think we are exactly the companion they want to give a home to.
In our humble opinion, the latter is the correct view.
However, during this week, we will introduce ourselves and tell you our life-to-date stories.
Perhaps those stories will make you want to visit us in person!
Then you will be able to decide whether we are one way or the other.
Stay tuned this week for stories from each of the pictured cats!
